Ganglion cyst
Anyone here had to have one surgicly removed? I'm scheduled to have one removed this coming Monday from my wrist. Not looking forward to it! After looking at the MRI images today with the doc, it looks like the root is dead center between the radius and ulna bones. Crap! I use my hands for a living! I can't afford to be down for the predicted 3 weeks recovery time. As a side note, I am not looking forward to being knocked out for the procedure. (Blind fold me, give me a local, I'm good to go...)

Had one on a toe. Keep coming back after shots. Finally had surgery, gone forever ( well at least for the last 3 years).
Best of lucks!

That is usually a fun surgery to do. I like the dissection.
If you have a choice between a general anesthetic and something else, you want something else

That only works if you have demons in your semen.

Aparently it is a big one. It resides between the radius and ulna and is infringing on the tendon passages. I feel the tendon stress (rubbing) mid fore arm. Oh the joys of the 50s.

My father had them. He called them "Bible Bumps". In rural Tejas, apparently they just slammed them with a heavy object/Bible!

I had one in my wrist, probably from carpentry. It was so bad that I finally argued and swore with my insurance/ doctor that it needed surgery. They finally agreed. The morning I was to go to prep for the surgery it was gone. Tried the Bible thing, didnt work.

Heh, this brings back memories. Don't know where the pics went, but it looks like any other Ganglion Cyst. FWIW, mine was drained once and never came back so no operation.
Who wants to diagnose this bump on my wrist?

I had one removed from my wrist over ten years ago, they put me out. Prior to the surgery it would go away occasionally and then get to about an inch in diameter. Surgery was successful and I have full feeling and movement.

I've had one about three quarters the size of a dime on the side of my tendon above the index finger knuckle on my left hand since I was in my late 20s or very early 30s. It has never bothered me, so I never considered having it removed & never heard of having them removed until this thread. I've bumped it pretty hard a few times & it hurt some but has never changed. Good luck with your surgery.

syncroid,
I had one removed on my right wrist when I was 7. Then 3 years ago I had one on my left wrist that was as bad as your describing. Mine was being caused by a bone spur, the largest my surgeon had seen. He had to shave the bone down quite a bit. 3 weeks in a cast and a month of therapy to get the range of motion started again. Took about 6 months for the full range of motion to come back but was not painful at all during the healing process and I could use my hand right awy after the cast came off and enough to function while it was on. I also use my hands to make my living.

Had one removed that was very bad about 5 years ago. "While they were in there" discovered that it was more complicated than they thought. Surgery ended up taking almost 2 hours, cast to the elbow for 3 weeks, full immobilization, then 6 months of rehab. Wrist still doesn't flex as much as the other one...I wanted local also but was warned that the delicate nature of the surgery they didn't want me moving at all, so I was under general. Good luck, mine sorta sucked...
Pic of the scar....

Had one removed a few years ago from the palm of my hand. No idea how it formed there or why. The Doctor was good enough to follow one of the palm print lines so I have no visible scar. Mostly routine surgery. I wasn't scheduled to be knocked out but when the warm juice went in, I went out. Woke up in post op as happy and loopy as a clam.
![]() The trick is to exercise the area where the cyst is removed after the surgery to prevent the cyst from reforming. That and following the therapy routine. That Bible trick broke more bones than cysts.

Mrs. Z-man has one on top of her left foot. Had survery to remove it TWICE. Obviously, it grew back both times. Apparently, hers is the type that cannot be completely removed.
The only remedy for her is to have it drained every 3-4 months. Her being a teacher and on her feet all day doesn't help her situation, since that only puts more pressure on the ganglion. -Z-man.

I had one on my wrist years ago. Army doctor told me she could give me a shot, but it'd come back. After a few shots, they could remove it surgically...but it still might come back. She told me easiest fix was to slam a hard/heavy book on it, or just smack it on my dresser every morning till it went away. I thought she was a quack. About a week later, playing volleyball, I dove and slammed my wrist into a pole. Hurt like a mother, cyst went away, never came back.
