Ouch! Not good vinny!

dafischer 04-10-2014 10:43 AM

Look at the bright side...your chassis is freshly lubed. :D (ducking.....)

Evans, Marv 04-10-2014 10:47 AM

Don't ya just hate it when that happens??

scottmandue 04-10-2014 10:49 AM

Duct tape!

VINMAN 04-10-2014 11:08 AM

I figured a couple tubes of JB Weld I'll be good as new.

Rick V 04-10-2014 11:24 AM

That just helps to keep the rust off the underside. I would use an expandable rubber plug in the hole and some heavier oil

I referred to my Land Rover as "self galvanizing".

GH85Carrera 04-10-2014 12:08 PM

I bet the CIA, FBI, & IRS conspired to steal it! They needed it to keep hiding that missing airplane!

Shifter 04-10-2014 12:11 PM

Next time your jeep starts telling you a knock-knock joke, I bet you will ask "who's there?" faster!

daepp 04-10-2014 12:46 PM

4, 6, 8? Old or new?

shadowjack1 04-10-2014 12:47 PM

Will that buff out??

Bill Douglas 04-10-2014 12:58 PM

I had an Audi that ran fine with only 5 cylinders. I'm sure the jeep will too.

fastfredracing 04-10-2014 01:03 PM

That looks like the bottom of a 4.0. I am guessing 99 or newer. Remember when the 4.0 was considered invincible? I wonder if piston cracked first. I have seen a bunch of them come apart only to find the piston skirt laying in the pan, or jammed into a counterwieght.
I think up to these years, they were great motors.

pavulon 04-10-2014 01:05 PM

The Aussies are listening for it pinging.

VINMAN 04-10-2014 01:15 PM

It's a '99 4.0 Around 600 miles since a rebuild. Gave me about a 4 second warning before it let go. Had been running absolutely perfect before that.

This is why I rebuilt it in the first place.

fastfredracing 04-10-2014 01:25 PM

I've done 3 or 4 that looked exactly like that one. Whole side of the piston missing. The earlier ones ( 99, 2000)and seem to be the habitual offenders. I think I crank kit is fairly cheap, but I find that they suck to r&r .
It is nearly impossible to find a used motor for one of these, they all blow up.

VINMAN 04-10-2014 01:30 PM

Piston skirts and heads cracking between # 3 and 4 are the most common issues with these motors. When I did the rebuild I went with Speed Pro pistons. HUGE difference in piston design and skirt construction. I'm really pissed, because this is the first time I've had a rebuild let go on me. ( other than a race motor..) and like I said, I had absolutely no warning.

wdfifteen 04-10-2014 03:15 PM

No warning, catastrophic - I'm sayin' rod bolt failure.

Rick V 04-10-2014 03:27 PM

Vinny, remember those extra bolts you had after you rebuilt it? Yeah they go there. (all meant in fun)

911dean 04-10-2014 03:58 PM

Wow! That's some damage. I guess better than through the block. Of course I'm thinking the block isn't unscathed.

scottmandue 04-10-2014 04:05 PM

SBC swap!

Dan J 04-10-2014 04:36 PM

Is that a Jeep 991 GT3?

dafischer 04-10-2014 05:34 PM

That was it's way of saying that it didn't want to be rebuilt, Vinny.

Shouldn't the question now be "3, 5, 7?" ???
Bummer about the motor.

Yeah that's the first thing I thought also. Block is trashed. Cracked along the oil pan rail.

I remember one time, after rebuilding a manual transmission, putting it back in the car, then going over to my bench to put tools away and clean up. Looking up in horror and seeing a synchro ring hanging on the pegboard. I was slightly upset.

.

Hugh R 04-10-2014 07:19 PM

Vinny, I did that once with a DB4 engine, getting ready to try starting it and kicked an oil chain tensioner piston across the garage floor. Eff Me! At least I hadn't tried to start it yet.
