That just helps to keep the rust off the underside. I would use an expandable rubber plug in the hole and some heavier oil

I referred to my Land Rover as "self galvanizing".

I bet the CIA, FBI, & IRS conspired to steal it! They needed it to keep hiding that missing airplane!

Next time your jeep starts telling you a knock-knock joke, I bet you will ask "who's there?" faster!

I had an Audi that ran fine with only 5 cylinders. I'm sure the jeep will too.

That looks like the bottom of a 4.0. I am guessing 99 or newer. Remember when the 4.0 was considered invincible? I wonder if piston cracked first. I have seen a bunch of them come apart only to find the piston skirt laying in the pan, or jammed into a counterwieght.
I think up to these years, they were great motors.

It's a '99 4.0 Around 600 miles since a rebuild. Gave me about a 4 second warning before it let go. Had been running absolutely perfect before that.

This is why I rebuilt it in the first place.

I've done 3 or 4 that looked exactly like that one. Whole side of the piston missing. The earlier ones ( 99, 2000)and seem to be the habitual offenders. I think I crank kit is fairly cheap, but I find that they suck to r&r .
It is nearly impossible to find a used motor for one of these, they all blow up.

Piston skirts and heads cracking between # 3 and 4 are the most common issues with these motors. When I did the rebuild I went with Speed Pro pistons. HUGE difference in piston design and skirt construction. I'm really pissed, because this is the first time I've had a rebuild let go on me. ( other than a race motor..) and like I said, I had absolutely no warning.

Vinny, remember those extra bolts you had after you rebuilt it? Yeah they go there. (all meant in fun)
