The cult of Golf - am I alone in no f*cks given?
Most guys I know (neighbors and old white men like my father) were glued to the TV recently watching the Masters.
I play golf once or twice a year and yes its a nice day out. But spending hours in front of the TV watching someone else hit a small white ball exceptionally well, looks like a massive waste of time to me. I feel the same way about most televised sports I'm sure I'm in the minority

I enjoy playing, but can't watch it.
My dad was an avid golfer, and used to watch it on TV, too...never could understand how he could sit there for hours watching that shiz.

Like a little golf once in a while with friends but to watch on TV, I'd rather watch ice melt.

I never watch it. It is ALMOST as boring as watching a poker tournament. Come on, watching someone play cards.
Watching someone play chess or checkers would be thrilling if you like watching a card game.

It makes for great background noise for a good couch nap.

And pretentious too
Can't forget the pretentiousness that surrounds this particular sport. From the Country Club to the hush hush of the Masters et al... Miller Lite years ago had a commercial showing a maddening rush of NFL defensive players going after the golfer while teeing or putting, was hilarious... golf may be a skill, but definetly not a sport.

Not alone, I find it about as riveting as watching the grass grow.

Took golf lessons a few years ago -- instructor said I have a natural swing.
Watching golf? No thanks. Playing golf? No thanks. Playing mini-golf? Once in a blue moon. Not a big fan of the sport.

In the words of George Carlin "Watching golf on television is like watching flies fark!" I play golf, not too often but am playing this Friday in a tournament. I don't mind watching golf on TV, it's relaxing, kind of like watching a cooking show.

Boring as all hell.
Mini golf is fun, though.

Living in a retirement area, I'm surrounded by GOLF nuts. All golfers at the big New Years Eve Party I go to.....I'm out on a snowmobile, dirt bike or long m/c trip when they are on the Links....
Only thing more boring than playing gold; watching it on TV.....

Like you I am bored to tears at televised sports. I really enjoy participating but don't get the thousands of hours many guys spend watching the games, compiling the stats, arguing about useless minutiae about this team or that player. Many professional athletes strike me as over-paid narcissistic whiners. While I appreciate an athlete who has a mastery of a particular sport I don't want to invest the time and energy it takes to wait around for some prima donna to pull off something spectacular. I like the highlight reels. Golf is great for 9 holes with a few buddies.

You need athletes for a sport. Golfers are not athletes. They are talented but not athletes. To be an athlete, you need to be in athletic shape and "round" is not a shape. I regularly play golf and enjoy the activity. I also know lots of people who think that driving an old car is boring and looking at more old cars is excruitiatingly boring. Different strokes for different folks.

Sports, at the apex, is the best theater, real time drama, the age old struggle to win at the highest level, available: I'd rather watch the final nine on Sunday at Augusta than 90% of the predictable, shlock movies that try and pass for entertainment.
So I did. I finished what I had to do on the farm, ensconced myself in front of the tube for the last 90 minutes and hoped for a shoot out. I'll do the same next year. Unless the other Majors have final day ties, some compelling story line, that will be the first and last televised golf I watch this year. I haven't watched a second of Hockey, the NBA and won't watch a scintilla of regular season baseball. When the play-offs go deep, however, and it really matters, I'll watch the second half or third period. Unscripted drama, baby. Good for the soul.

I tried for years to enjoy golf. I took lessons 3 times. I hated every minute I was on the course. I didn't find it relaxing. I found it frustrating. I haven't stepped on a golf course in 14 years.
I took up shooting instead. Now that relaxes me.
