I've have three jobs in the last decade. Each one with varying degrees of time I can come here. My present job is the least, I don't care for the worker-bee gig. I'd rather tackle projects which are far more interesting and varying in intensity.

VINMAN 04-19-2014 04:18 PM

I have someone that does my posting for me.

I post for 12 other people.

Seriously, I have been up since 4:30 AM. It's Easter Sunday. Usually I wake up earlier. If I stay up really late, I wake up at five.

VINMAN 04-20-2014 03:07 AM

The majority of time on here is when I'm at work. I have one of those jobs that I have to just sit around and wait until SHTF. I also frequent a couple of other boating and auto related forums. But Pelican is my primary target.

Steve Carlton 04-20-2014 06:40 AM

I'm not ready to say anything yet.

Shaun @ Tru6 04-20-2014 06:51 AM

I've parted a lot of cars out over the years and spend a lot of time on Classifieds.

I used to post a lot on Technical but there are only so many times you can tell folks what color their wheels should be.

I've wasted way too much time on PARF.

The Dinner thread makes up the difference.

VINMAN 04-20-2014 07:14 AM

Hey Shaun, was great meeting and hangin with you yesterday.!

I spend way too much sitting around in airplane hangars in oddball locations around the world, just waiting for someone to ask me a question. We used to just play cards, or read, or b.s. I guess we still do all of that, but now the internet has been added to the mix. Sometimes, other than the rest of my team, it's can be the only connection I have to English speaking people. We need to be there, in our tech support role, but there is often precious little for us to actually do. Kind of like a fireman, I would imagine.

As a Boeing employee, I feel I have to address Bob's comment made on the first page of this thread. He has absolutely no idea what he is talking about. The Boeing company monitors all computer usage, right down to every single key stroke - it would be impossible to get away with what he accuses for long. We are all aware of cases where folks have been suspended or fired for that kind of activity.

I'd bet there are Boeing IT gurus who do it (i.e. the one who "hold the keys to the kingdom" so to speak). When I still did the corporate thang, I'd pound away on Pelican all day long (while multitasking)....many times a slow/no response would indicate that I'd better "start doing some REAL work" before anyone even realized it was necessary :p

Maybe - except it seems all of our IT is contracted out to India.

I guess years ago there was some of this going on out in the factory, on the shop floors, where they had "shared" work stations. If they were left on all day and just anyone was using them, it would be hard to track any misuses to any one person. Today, however, they require users to log off those shared stations when they are done, and the next user must then log on. Everyone has different levels of security and authorization, with their accounts allowing them access only to those applications needed for their specific jobs. So even there, on the formerly anonymous shared work stations, everyone is monitored.

As far as those of us on the engineering side of the house, we have always had our own computers. No one else has access and our use is monitored, so it would be very hard to hide any misuse. I just don't know of anyone who would even think of it. The stakes are way too high.

I guess this kind of strikes a nerve with me because I have heard so many of these kinds of accusations over the years. Many people in this area call Boeing "the Lazy B" (and worse). Yes, there is some truth to that - particularly within the hourly union. They are called the "IAM", or International Association of Machinists - we call them the "I ain't movings", and for good reason. The union, like all good unions, protects them in their laziness and incompetence. It may even protect them if they get caught wasting company time surfing, I don't know. The rest of us, of course, enjoy no such protections. The rest of us actually have to make it on our own merit, on our contributions to the company. That "Lazy B" that some may enjoy is notably absent from our ranks, but the stigma lingers. Especially with those who have never worked there and get their information from a friend, or a friend's cousin, or wherever...

I get all my information first hand from some "higgins head" on the Internet....seems like I've known him for years, so it must be true :D

I keed, I keed....

Ayles 04-20-2014 08:03 PM

Sorry about the lazy B comment :) I grew up not too far from the 747 plant in the 80s. My engineer friends have also been very clear that unauthorized usage of computers is a pretty big no no at Boeing. Contrast that with working in the video game industry where games come first... We get emails occasionally from our IT dept asking people to cut down on the tv streaming! Thought it was pretty funny the first time I saw one of those emails go out.

On another sports car site, a mid-thirties guy had 77,000 posts since joining in 2005. 23-plus posts a day average over 9 years...

If 99% of his posts are political rants and half of 'em are pics of a crying baby, then we "might" have had the PLEASURE of his acquantance here a few years back :D. His last reincarnation here was at an even higher posts/day ratio however

If I am that busy at work, something bad has happened. My job is to make sure everything is working smoothly.

Last night though I was using the VPN from 12:00 to 1:40 am because an update to our management system that was applied yesterday afternoon reset some fundamental stuff that wasn't touched somehow and the repercussions his just before midnight. How an update for one part sets an unrelated part back to defaults is puzzling.

Sorry Jeff - I stand corrected and admoinshed. I ride with a lot of Boeing people (snow and m/c) that are on the internet during their work day. Dunno if they or on their own devices or company hardware. Was just an observation, never mention it again.

So, if posting from my post about how much I post in a post modern posture does that make me a post whore?
