How is it that you have the time to post here so often?
I have over 5800 posts in 11 years and that's too many. I work for a living as do most of you. There are some with 5 digit posts who are supposedly business owners or executives. I don't know anyone in management who has that kind of idle time on their hands. Heck, I work 12 - 16 days regularly and I'm an individual contributor! If I had so much free time during the work day that I can peruse the internet, I'd be worried that I'm under utilized.

I have a little over 3000 posts in 12 years. I usually just can't think of anything clever enough to be worth posting. Like right now. I think I'll go to bed now.
|
Depends on what you do for a living...
I look at a screen all day waiting for something to fail. Exciting, I know  |
2.5 posts a day for me translate to maybe 1/2 hour?
I type >70 WPM and have no TV. Coming on Pelican is a way to unwind in the PM. I don't think I have posted much in the daytime recently - unless between jobs. The average American watches 4h of TV a day? I definitely don't have time for that. ;) G |
I had around 500 posts in one year. First year of 911 ownership so I need lots of info. I work in a VERY casual environment where internet surfing and game play is encouraged. I read pelican while my queries are running or while I wait for other processes to happen. Pretty conmon with a lot of west coast tech jobs...
|
Are you assuming that everyone is posting during the work day? It's 11:30 pm here in CA and I am definitely not at work. I did post one time earlier today and I was sitting at my desk.
|
I'm neurotic. Wish I was kidding. I'm not on PPOT all day. I'm on 20 times a day for 30 seconds a pop. From an ad revenue angle, I am Waynes dream.

Then there are those Boeing employees........On the internet to make it look like they are working........I know a bunch of them........

I was like Peter (back in the day - when I had a respectable job), I'd wait for a help desk call to come in and it was a case of "I'm on the computer, I must be working."
|
If you are going to surf the net, Pelican is the place to be. I am just wondering how you guys get away with it. My employer owns my laptop, air card, iPhone, mobile minutes and data time. My job is not unlike that of an attorney where I have to track billable time.
|
Nothing to get away with. I have to get work done, not bill hours. Since I'm often answering work emails after midnight, I don't feel guilty or "under utilized." If anything, I need a serious vacation as I'm maxed out on days and end up waking up at 3am worrying about funding, etc...

It depends on how you measure productivity.
If it's simply how busy you are, then you're a worker bee. Nothing wrong with that, the world runs on worker bees. But the higher you go up in a corporation the less it depends on being busy as it does in producing results. I've known people who were so busy they didn't notice their business was failing until it was too late. They couldn't find the time to step back, take a deep breath and study the big picture because they were simply too busy. People like that, althuogh very hard working, are bad for a company. There are times when a member of the leadership team spends hours or days contemplating a problem and how to resolve it. The decision could save the company hundreds of thousands, or cost it twice that much if they make a bonehead call. The ultimate solution may be influenced by several hours of web surfing, which could be called investigating. Maybe they have a presentation to make to the corporate leadership team and are running scenarios through their head for half a day. To the outside it would appear as daydreaming. Maybe they have 4 or 5 of those types of decisions pending and are jugling them. Some of them may be nothing more than problem solvers and due to their extensive knowledge and experience are simply there just in case something goes wrong, they'll know how to handle it quickly before it gets out of hand and costs millions. maybe they'll only really do a few things a week, but those things are huge in impact. They may be sitting there on monday morning thinking "I only have to do 3 or 4 things this week, but any one of them could cost me my career if I blow it or get me an extra 5 figures on a bonus if I get it right. Are they busy during that time? Hardly. Are they working? It may not look like it even though their average work day is 13 hours long. Lets just say that sometimes they long for the good old days when life was easy and all they had to do was stay busy. Or maybe they're just so good they can spend a half hour a day screwing off and get away with it. |
I am normally here between 11-2am when I am half asleep. I work best after 10pm, so when I am thinking about something, or get tire of screwing around looking at drawings and what not, I go here to see what's cooking. There seem to be always something interesting. During the day, I am not usually here unless I am waiting for something.
|
And some of us feel blessed if we can get more than 4 hours sleep.
I've been running on a two or three average for the past week. Shut up, dont tell him that. I can tell him anything I want to, you don't tell me what to do. Oh yeah, what happens when the council on foreign affairs hears about this? you wouldn't. OK, then I'll tell the bilderberg. You better not, they're still steaming about what MRM said. No kidding, they were pissed. I haven't heard from him lately. You don't suppose ... |
I'm retired, I do what I want, when I want.
This place is therapeutic so I write off all my purchases on my income tax. |

It's very efficient way to get in touch with what real, like minded people think of the world. I used to spend 1/2 an hour at the coffee shop in the morning (plus 1/2 and hour travel, plus gas) and an hour at the Tavern after work (plus 1/2 and hour travel, plus gas, plus gin). Now I can check in with my "friends" anytime I need to take a break from work. No travel, no gas, no - well, sometimes gin is involved.
I "get away with it" because I am my employer (I own the corporation that writes my paycheck), so I don't have hours to keep, just work to do. My boss approves of anything I want to do.:D |
I'm in the "men's room", so no time being wasted here...

I'm self employed and just enjoy seeing what others are up to concerning their P-cars. I check this site once or twice a day the same as I do other Media sites that I enjoy.

I was sent here from a parallel universe to monitor the human race... checking in on PPOT is part of my assignment.

Posts in almost 14 years....1155. Guess I don't post a ton but I read all the time. If I'm not with a patient then I am at my desk working on their charts, which are electronic. Pelican and the other forums I frequent help break up my day and keep me sane!
|
Like Widgeon I am retired. I can do what I want, how I want and when I want.
However my wife gets on my case when I spend too much time on the laptop. You all keep me sane. People that know me would dispute that haha.....G:) |

We all make time for what we think is "important".
Someone right now is getting on a plane to go to a stamp-collectors convention in Brussels...to him or her, that's important. |
Time..........
I am retired and the engine build is done!

I enjoy the give and take here, it is the only site I actively participate in. Less than three posts a day means I'm addicted, but under digital methadone treatment:D |
Completely addictive personality is the only explanation I can give. I actually have a fairly busy life most of the time but I'm on a computer a lot and click between various news sites, my email and this BBS. FB has become just as much of a time-suck in the last 5-6 years, just reading the stupid news feed and clicking on photos and links.
I leave my laptop at home in the am when I leave my pad and I don't get home until evening but the iphone in my pocket is a miniature computer and I surf the same sites when I'm alone eating or waiting in line somewhere, etc... I'll admit that it's pretty ridiculous how much time I've spent here and it's something that I frequently scratch my head over, figuratively speaking. Now I'm addicted to the Marketplace discussion forum as well...jeezis. |
I'm also retired and haven't posted much in the last 13 years here. I usually take a look here for a short while in the AM before I start working on my projects. I'm usually on here (& a couple of other places) for maybe an hour in the evenings. I also don't feel like I have to make small comments on every thread to watch my post count build and only usually comment if I feel I may have something to contribute. I enjoy the forum very much as a place to learn various things and experience some wit & humor. There are also subjects and posters I avoid, having learned the destructive and unfriendly patterns associated with them. I attribute the fact that some people are here to some being productive enough to justify doing it and/or knowing some people are just more social beings than I am. Besides, my wife accuses me of spending my time looking at boobies when I'm on here - which is only partly true.
|
I consider this my civic duty.

What? You're not on the Pelican Rewards Program? The more you post, the more rewards points you get towards purchases on the retail side of this site.

If only that were true... I'd have a new long block for my 944!!

I'm either reading scripts or hanging out on a Set. Lots of time.

I have a long commute on the train and post a lot from my phone.

You mean EVERYONE isn't getting paid $100 per post? I don't understand...maybe y'all should PM Wayne about this?
Please don't ban me for spilling the beans Wayne SmileWavy |
I actually work for NSA and I am just monitoring you folks.
