12 x 21 sq mile Iceberg breaks loose.

Just recently, (get a grasp of this scale) An iceberg 21 miles x 12 miles, and 200 foot thick, has broken loose from the South Pole Antarctic Ice field and is drifting into open water.

Thick about your daily commute or car trip to the next town.

12 x 21 MILES of floating ice.

In this video, note the chart scale is 20 miles per ~1/2" for scale

Running the numbers at 12 x 21 miles x 200 foot thick, and assuming 1/4 cu foot of ice per blender, I calculated 5,884 Billion blenders of Pina coladas and/or Margaritas worth of ice.

you bring the mixer.

Any idea how much water this berg displaces? I've been reading a Sci-Fi novel recently and in the story a massive ice shelf breaks off from Antarctica (bigger though, like 1/3 of the continent), and it causes the sea level on earth to rise by several meters!! Major cataclysm in this book...

If it was floating already, as it probably was, it won't displace anything.

You could park that thing in the San Fransisco Bay and California still wouldn't let you water your front lawn.

We passed by this much smaller iceberg on the way to a trek on the Viedma Glacier in Argentina last month. At the end of the trek the guides produce a bottle of liquor and served it over chunks of ice broken off the glacier. Although the glaciers in Patagonia are plentiful and massive it is sobering when they tell you how much some of them have shrunk in recent years.

Even frozen, water can hold harmful bacteria.
Though I have drunk some bad water out of necessity, don't think that since it comes from a glacier or is frozen that it is safe to drink.

12 x 20 miles = 240 sq miles Yes, that's quite a bit of ice.

But I do wonder how uncommon this is. Our powers of observation have gotten much, much better, and we are watching polar ice more now then ever before.

Wait a minute - It was CNN! They must now be speculating that this ice caused the Malaysian Airline plane to go missing!
