Find Me An "Affordable 996", Get a Finder's Fee!

Inspired by the Affordable 996 thread ( The Affordable 996 Thread ), my lovely wife and I sold our much enjoyed 1986 Targa this week. Now I don't know if this was the best idea ever (we're still a bit sad to see it go), but we want to try a 996 and we're not wealthy enough to own both at the same time. So the 86 was sold to a very good home to finance our 996 purchase.

So instead of just my wife and I looking, I thought the more eyes looking for a car the better. That's where you guys come in. Ideally, we're looking for one of the great, affordable 996s. A car like Halm's ( Fs: 1999 996 ) is EXACTLY what we're looking for. Onewhippedpuppy also has a lovely 996 that ticks the right boxes ( The Affordable 996 Thread ). These are the types of 996 we're after.

We're not scared of a car with higher mileage as long as the maintenance has been done and the car is clean and presents well. There are many high mileage 911s that have been owned by fanatical enthusiasts like many of us on here. You could eat off my 425,000km 86 Targa. There are fantastic, affordable 996s out there...we just need to find the right one. This is why we need your help.

What's in it for you? Well for starters...you get to help us find a 911 and get us back into the Porsche family ASAP. We dearly miss our 86 already..and we hope a 996 will give us many smiles per mile too. We're offering 2 finder's fees. #1) If you find a 996 that we ultimately buy, I'll give you a $50 gift certificate of your choice. While it's not a huge amount, it's a decent amount for merely posting a link. #2) If you happen to be local to a car we're interested in and have a peek at it for us and we buy it, you will get a $50 gift certificate of your choice.

So Pelicans....please help get us into an "affordable 996".

996.1 or 996.2?
Manual or Trip?
Options?
Colors?
Price?
High miles...how high are you open to?

All excellent questions.

996.1 or 996.2 Either will work. Though I'm guessing because of our price range it's more likely to be a 996.1

Definitely a manual. Options? The usual...Leather, A/C, etc. Stuff like sport seats or optional wheels and other higher dollar options are a nice bonus. We're not really fussy on colors...but we're not fond of blue or yellow.

Price? The lower the better. Ideally something in the $15K-$18k range. As I said...Halm's car is EXACTLY what we were after and he was asking $16K.

Miles is really a tough one to answer. I think mileage in an of itself is a poor indicator of condition. I've seen 50,000 mile 911s that were in worse condition than my 425,000km 911. So it's really tough to say on this one.....I guess it will depend on condition and maintenance ultimately rather than outright mileage. But I wouldn't turn my nose up at a car with 100k+ miles as long as it's been properly maintained and loved.

Or you could just do a national CL search yourself and find your dream buggy in short order. Spend the $50 on something nice for the little woman.

I would check the following:

PCA classifieds (if you are a member)
Pelican
Rennlist
6speedonline
Ebay
Cars.com
Autotrader.com
Craigslist

I honestly find nearly all of my cars on Craigslist. If you have an iphone or ipad, download the "cpro Craigslist client". Unlike Search Tempest it allows you to do a true search of multiple CL sites.

I'll let you know if I see anything. How far are you willing to travel?

Here ... you can buy my car ... it is just slightly higher than the stated budget ... but worth every penny in the long run ... considering new Michelin's, 30k service and full service history

FS: 1999 996 6-speed silver coupe 33 k-miles - perfect

And if you are at all concerned about the IMS bearing, please consider that the 1999 used the more robust dual row bearing. I quote the following "According to information published about the Eisen IMS Class Action Lawsuit, the single row IMS bearing used in 2000 through 2005 model years is reported to have an 8% failure rate, versus less than 1% with the dual row IMS bearing."

Lovely car! Will keep it in mind if I don't find anything within my previous stated budget.

Thanks for the comments and the link!
