A Pleasant Surprise

In November I posted for a job in my department (IT) to help stand up my company's new facility in Atlanta. This job would have had me splitting my time 50/50 between my current job and the new job. It was this arrangement that I used to get my boss to relent and let me post. I didn't get the job.

In February, I posted for a job in a different department for a new team at my company's Atlanta facility. The team lead had been asking me to apply for about a year, but as it would require me to drop all of my current work, I couldn't convince my boss until he hired two new people for me to train.

I got notification that I got the job today. The surprise in the job offer was that it also included a promotion. I accepted immediately. I still have to work out the details on a transition date and move date.

Congrats!

I have only worked for two companies throughout my career and I never encountered a situation where I had to get my boss to approve me putting my name in for a new job or promotion. Seems selfish and counterproductive. Is this common practice nowadays? Succession planning was always part of our HR plans which seemed to address these issues.

Being retired, it clearly has no impact on me but just a question out of curiosity.

Sorry to pop your bubble, but the heat in Atlanta is anything but "dry". The nickname "Hot-Lanta" doesn't all come from the night life! Still, that part of Georgia is a great place to live with lots of things to do socially. You will need to think carefully about where you will live compared to where you will work. If you can do flex hours, that will take some of the commute problems off your plate. Probably the least expensive place to live will be in Paulding County west of Atlanta while the most expensive would be in Fulton or Dekalb counties. Good luck on your move!

Sammy was being sarcastic.

I didn't have to have my boss' permission to apply, but he could have easily torpedoed the process. I'd like to think that I have patience and persuasiveness.
