List your 'alternative' transportation - Hybrid, EV, LPG

So, I was out on the Volt site - and, hummmmm some of the 'names' posting there seemed very familiar... (I won't 'out' them however)....

How many of you will admit to owning something other than a 98 octane burning vehicle? But, golf carts don't count (unless you get to drive them to work - smile). Tesla, Prius, Energi, 918, Volt, ELR, come on, I know you got 'em....

Yes, I recently joined the 'dark' side - I own a Volt now - so far the honeymoon is wonderful, no doubt supplemented by the fact I get to plug it in at work. My energy cost is going down to almost zero, with just an occasional plug-in at home...

Does this count? I run my Unimog on biodiesel that I make myself. Fuel cost is a $1.45 a gallon, and I get about 15mpg, So this is my economy vehicle!

Does it count if it runs on 99 octane and is supercharged?

I drive a very cheap diesel. I doubt anyone drives at a significantly 'lower cost per mile' than I do.

My sole vehicle now is a motorcycle that gets about 50mpg, so pretty frugal. Honestly, I'd go with one of the new electric bikes (the Zero S) but they're still too pricey, even with incentives. It would work for me becuase there are two Whole Foods with free charging within a half-mile of me.

My dad has a whole fleet of CNG pickups. If I was still living in OK I'd have one as well. Great performance and CHEAP fuel.

I have a vanpool to work and a nice set of LPCs. (Leather Personnel Carriers) as the old man called them. I don't ride the motorcycle, as I don't have enough experience to feel safe at it. If I needed a commuter beast, I would get a three year old civic or Corolla. Nice enough car with good mileage, I wouldn't feel like I needed electric at that point. Possibly if I had a charging dock at work for free joules....

Don't need a hybrid or EV to do "better" as an aware and caring commuter.

It helps offset the SUV's 15mpg and the 993.

I was thinking about a leaf, but not owning my residence, a hookup is actually a major PITA, especially if you'd like to move every few years.

I have a Sinclair C5( a battery motor assisted pedal tricycle) which allegedly has a battery range of 10 miles, but longest I've used it for was two 1 lap(one mile each) races at the Mercedes test track at Brooklands.Tried using it for the one mile trip from home to watch a marathon go by, but was thwarted within quarter of a mile of the destination when the front tyre came off the plastic front wheel because the bead failed on the tyre rim. Boy was that thing a pain to pull home uphill all the way-the front fender had nearly cut through my hand by the time I got it home.Sticking with oil based fuels for the foreseeable future!!!

Foxpaws, if you can, keep us posted on the Volt. There's a family down the street from me that has 2 of them parked in their driveway, and I'd be interested to hear real world reports - especially in a climate like yours)

(I usually take an aluminum Specialized to work - 1 cup of yogurt = 6 miles)
