buyer / seller rant,.....

I am sorry for posting this, but I am little fired up right now and wanted to see what everyone thought,...I will leave names out of this for now

On Monday there was a classifieds ad for something I had been looking for, for over a year now...

I contacted the seller by PM saying "I will take them, I am away on business with very limited access to internet. I return Friday night around 630, and I will send money as soon as I get home"

I just got a PM back from the seller saying he sold them.

I guess I was raised differently. I was always taught you are only as good as your word. I am not a new member to Pelican and have been around here for some time. Bought and sold hundreds of things here without ever a problem.

I thought we were all on these forums to help each other out. To help keep these Pcars on the road, alive and kicking...

If im wrong, I guess im wrong, but I have held parts for guys for months until they had money to pay. Christ, I have shipped parts on good faith while I waited for checks to clear, etc,...

Guess im just different...

Unfortunately, some people are simply Richards at the core (obviously the seller in this instance), and don't have a care in the world about disappointing people!

thank you, I just wanted to make sure I wasn't in the wrong here...I have been apart of online car forums for over 18 years, I know how this stuff works. I guess I just always give people the benefit.

Did he respond to your initial PM indicating that he would hold them?

Then he should have at least had the decency to let you know he had a buyer lined up and given you a shot to purchase - doesn't sound like the seller tried very hard.

There's the give away right there 'try'. The flakiest word in the English language.
Sucks man. I feel your pain

If I was selling something and someone contacted me with as committed a response as yours to purchase I would wait until the agreed date, contact you if I hadn't heard to see if you still wanted the item and then move on from there depending on your response.

I would say the only mistake you may have made was not to get him to agree 100% to hold them. When you got the wishy washy response I would have made him commit one way or the other.

Still a bastard act on his part not to contact you though.

What is it you are after there must be someone on here who can help you out.

Cheers Al

Send a message via AIM to Gogar
Cash in hand = sale.

Promises via email? mmmmmm.

I don't completely disagree with you, I'm just showing you the other side.

If you had enough internet access to send him a PM, then you had enough to send him $20 via PayPal or something as a 'deposit'. Then you would have a much higher moral ground, perhaps even a legal one.

Just my opinion. Cheers

If I were the seller I would have held them.

If I had been the buyer and gotten a response like you got I would have sent a paypal right away.

Cash in hand type of person here too. I've sold cars where I had a laundry list of people wanting to buy it. My response, first one with cash.

I've held things up to and including cars for Pelicans without a deposit. I consider all of you my friends. Random stranger - cash in hand or GTFO.

I don't see a problem.

The seller never promised to hold them.

He said he'd "try".

At that point - (as has been posted) - you should have sent Paypal $ to seal it OR continued the dialogue until a firm agreement was reached where he would hold the item for you.

Sorry I don't mean to offend but I have an extensive sales background and when I want something really really bad....I pony the money up ASAP...even if delivery is going to be delayed.

Internet classifieds is the absolute flakiest way of communicating ever. I have found that maybe 1 out of 10 deals ever turn out the way you'd want. Buyer beware.

You had enough internet access to read the ad and pm you would take it, then you had enough to paypal the money.

I too have had people say they would take an item, only to flake out....

As a seller, I would have held the item. As a buyer, if anyone throws down "try", I ante up with PayPal.

As a seller, i figure there's more than one person who wants to buy what I'm selling. If not, then my price isn't right. If I get a guy who wants me to hold something, then flakes out, I'll have someone else waiting for that item.

A few years ago there was an item which I really, really wanted.
Told the seller I'd take it, but farted around half the afternoon finishing up something else unimportant.
Later called seller for directions but the item was already long gone.
Such is life.
Still kicking myself. Didn't blame him.

As a seller, I've given away things on a silver platter, asking only a couple bucks for my time or free.
I always figure someone needs it more then the dumpster and good karma comes around.
Most are grateful and pretty cool, but one guy took about a hundred bucks worth of flowers, then split without paying.

There are all types on both sides.

As a seller I might wonder how you could surf Pelican and PM, but couldn't do paypal. Then a guaranteed sale come along and....?

I'm not saying I'd sell it after we PMed, but if I was you and just found what I'd been wanting for over a year, I'd do everything I could to close the deal ASAP.
