Find your favorite liberal and ask him how to run a deficit........

porsche4life 05-13-2014 12:25 PM

I understand the concept, but I don't see having 30k in a 77 that still needs paint. ;)

Find a nice formula vee and all the gear you need and go to auto X and track days for the fun of it

If you had $10,000 to spend..........

I would go and get the free 1969 camaro my cousin offered me.

Id probably buy or build a nice Miata to go hpde'ing in .

Ive always wanted some sort of sleeper as well. Id love to have an e46 wagon with the m3 drivetrain swaped in. Probably a strech for 10 though

tedg04 05-13-2014 01:09 PM

I'll add one more vote for a 914.

A VW Thing would be cool too.

porsche4life 05-13-2014 01:11 PM

I've got a sweet green '69 Bug I'd sell you for less than 10k... ;)

Now there you go exaggerating again. I figured we could do it for $ 29.5K. That is if the engine was nothing special, of course.:)

That's easy for me... I wanted to spend about the same for this season. I'm working on it right now.

I think the early (2002) Bimmers are very cool. Would probably paint it white with blue and red angled fender stripe. I also very much like the 635 CS cars, though they are a bit more of a grand touring car than a hot street coupe.

Super 7.........

That would be lots of fun except that I'm over 6 ft tall and getting into a Super 7 is like putting on a pair of tights. A removeable steering wheel helps. One of the neat things about a Super 7 is that in case of an accident it can double as a casket.

tedg04 05-13-2014 02:27 PM

A Datsun 510 or early Z would be cool too. Even an old beetle. In the family, you could do a 951 project on $10k too.

Adam 05-13-2014 03:13 PM

Cool thread.

About 12 months ago, I bought an '67 El Camino for around $3k. It drove great, with a cammed 350 and TH350 combo, tuned length headers with Cherrybombs and side exits, but had scruffy paint and interior (all humidity blisters in the paint). It's not quite a beater, the body was rust free and relatively straight, so we knocked out a couple of dents, pulled the lights/grille and as much of the trim as we could, rubbed it back and shot it with several coats of black primer at my friend's shop.

Before:

After:

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1400022303.jpg

I found an Chevelle vinyl bench in mint condition on craigslist, cleaned up the insides, new brake cylinders and threw on a booster, did the tierods, balljoints and bushings and boom! A great parts-getter - and one I find myself driving more than I would care to admit. It's loud as hell, looks meaner than snot and is hilarious to drive.

It maybe owes me less than $4k. However...

I've seen Classic Performance Products does Pro-Touring kits for these old piles and now I'm inspired to drop ~$4k more into it to give it the handling and high-end braking that I want. It will likely need to have 17" wheels to clear the brakes I want. It's a dirt cheap starting point and will look a lot like this once it's finished.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1400022189.jpg

I'll start an OT build thread when I get really stuck into it if anyone is interested.

I like your thinking.

sammyg2 05-13-2014 03:33 PM

I've got the $$$$ sitting around but don't really want to start another project.

But iffn I did, here's a couple I've been dreaming of for decades:

I'd buy a T bucket and build up a supercharged motor and all sorts of over the top radical things to make it ridiculous.

Or, I'd buy a 427 cobra replica and install a supercharged motor that stuck 3 or 4 feet out of the hood so you'd have to look around it to see. And I'd paint it chrome yellow with brite white stripes.

ten grand wouldn't get there, but it'd get it started.

911boost 05-13-2014 03:36 PM

I picked this up for $1,500 after I sold the 911. The paint isn't great but not bad, and there is zero rust on it. I fixed a few small things and tinker with it some, but mainly just get in and go. Getting 400 hp out of them is stupid easy and not that expensive. When the original 5.0 goes I am going to just get a new one from Ford and throw a blower on it and back that with a six speed. Great little cars in my opinion and the value for clean ones seems to be going up just a bit (although not like air cooled 911's, but it isn't even in the same class as them).

jyl 05-13-2014 05:02 PM

Do like the early 914s did. No seat. Build padding and upholstery right on the floor and bulkhead.

BeyGon 05-13-2014 05:19 PM

For $10k you should be able to get an MR2 and two 944s, have some money left over to set them up well.:D:):)

porsche4life 05-13-2014 05:28 PM

Obviously dean hasn't priced 944 go fast parts....

MRM 05-13-2014 06:40 PM

Consider an Audi S4. A few years ago I had a $5,000 budget and wanted to get a track-worthy car with a partner. We ended up getting a pretty beaten S4 with some serious turbo mods through Kaisen (Eric) of this board. It was a roller skate on wheels. My partner ended up driving it as a second car and loved it. It was also a track beast. Best of both worlds.

fred cook 05-13-2014 06:55 PM

Great suggestions............

You are doing great, guys, keep up the good ideas! One car that I am considering is a 1995 or 96 Jaguar XJS convertible with the 4.0 six cylinder engine. They seem to be going for under 10k in some cases! The 95 and 96 had the AJ16 engine which seems to have been the best of the breed. Plus, the long hood/short deck is a classy look!

PabloX 05-13-2014 06:56 PM

My wife would really like a Volvo P1800. I'd like a Toyota FJ.

B5? I think the biturbo S4's (esp with any go fast stuff) are well north of $10k. If not, glad I sold mine when I did.

For $10k you could get a lot of Mustang (as previously mentioned).

Are E36 M3's getting into $10k territory?

porsche4life 05-13-2014 08:08 PM

10k buys a damn nice E36 M

My father in law had a t-bucket with a built 327. Scared the crap outta me when he stepped on it a bit. Crazy, crazy power to weight.

wdfifteen 05-14-2014 05:37 AM

I like the way Sammy's thinking - little car big motor, lots of bling. But for $10k I'd probably end up with something like this:

Tervuren 05-14-2014 06:53 AM

I would go for a sub 1970's truck. If you wanted to stay air cooled - a corvair pick up done nicely would be a sweet fun/practical toy.

Since you already have a two door sports car, I'd recommend making the next project a truck. I smile every time I see an old pick-up cruising about. There is too much variety for me to post individual suggestions for year/make/model.

Personally, I already have two 80's Porsches, a new $10K project would either be a third 80's Porsche, or something from the 50's/60's, preferably a truck or open top sports car. There are only two modern cars I'd consider, but the S2000 is probably out of the $10K budget, and the other, a Boxster could be done for less than $10k.

scottmandue 05-14-2014 07:11 AM

I'm sorry, if I had $10 to blow I would pick up a well maintained high mileage 996 or Boxster...

For you $10K will buy a nice Miata or Z3

DanielDudley 05-14-2014 01:10 PM

I'm doing up a Fiat 124 spider right now. I have very little into it, and it came with nice paint.

I basically wanted something to screw around with, and they are nice drivers.

herr_oberst 05-14-2014 03:21 PM

A Volvo Amazon might be cool, or a Studebaker Hawk. And I haven't forgotten the shoebox Ford...

If you want to get experience doing things upside down and backwards, you could get into a cool Alfa Romeo too. GTV or Berlina.

GTV:

Berlina (sedan GTV, lower sales volume):
