If you had $10,000 to spend..........

on a project car, what would you buy? Another Porsche? Some other sports car? An antique American car? Hot rod? Cobra kit car (used of course)?

Since I finished building the 3.3SS engine for my SC, I have been moping around the house too much (according to my wife). She told me to take $10 grand and see what I could buy! A difficult offer to turn down or pass up! So what do you think?

Bill Douglas 05-13-2014 01:03 AM

You could spend a little of it on a camera and take some pics of Zeus for us.

And tell us a bit about how it's going.

Within family: 914

Out of family: Opel GT

Jim Richards 05-13-2014 02:34 AM

I'm gonna toss out a tail dragger...Corvair Corsa, 4x1bbl or turbo. :)

livi 05-13-2014 02:40 AM

First of all let me congratulate you on having such a loving and understanding wife. Not every husband will experience "Hey, darling, why don't you grab ten grand and buy yourself a nice car project, you look a bit down!" :)

IROC 05-13-2014 03:02 AM

FJ60 Land Cruiser. I would say an FJ40, but $10k only buys a beat-up driver and doesn't leave much left over. An FJ60 would be cool and a nice complement to a nice SC.

BReif61 05-13-2014 03:42 AM

If I had $10k laying around, I would build a AWD DSM. But I think that's a generational thing.

Could, but will need some work. Good ones are around $15-25K. Fortunately parts are pretty cheap. I'll have $40K in mine when the resto is done...

sc_rufctr 05-13-2014 03:50 AM

10k? ... 914 project! SmileWavy

slakjaw 05-13-2014 03:54 AM

Beater BMW 2002. Put a turbo on it and do some suspension work and go drive it.

wdfifteen 05-13-2014 03:54 AM

The biggest 1951 to 1965 Chrysler boat I could get.

berettafan 05-13-2014 04:26 AM

Looking at wranglers now in similar price range. We live in a small town and would get lots of non-highway use from it.

Bastard 914-6 could maybe be done.

Spec Miata (trailer, spares, etc would be add'l)

Not sure of price range but would also check out model A or similar aged car too.

You def. should cruise bring a trailer a few times before making a decision as well.

VINMAN 05-13-2014 04:32 AM

Early 70's Ford Bronco.

I have a project I'm getting ready to sell.
All you need is an engine, trans, paint and some TLC.
77 rust free Targa $8500

$10K...

I would get myself into a late 50's chevy pick-up. Been cruising the interwebz lately for a crusty, ugly, driver version. Can be easily had for under $5k.

I have a buddy that used to build 355ci small block chebies for Modified Race Cars, has one with a 4-spd and a 12-bolt (makes 480hp) wants 3k for the driveline. Came out of his old 71 c10.

I would leave truck as is, crusty, and SLAM it to the ground with deep dish painted steel wheels (drab olive green or root beer) with white walls and call it a day.

I've thought about it once or twice ;)

'49-51 shoebox Ford. Flatty with a three on the tree.

What's the budget to spend on the project once you have it? $10K including costs to fix up?

Maybe a B coupe at that price or a really really rusty C coupe. Otherwise expect missing parts...

My C coupe would be perfect. All there rusty not running. But Id never sell it - too much sentimental attachment

996 or Boxster

jyl 05-13-2014 07:22 AM

If you go the kit route, I'd vote for a Super Seven . . .

I'd be all over that beauty if it had a supertec engine in it...

FLYGEEZER 05-13-2014 07:40 AM

Wouldn't be spent on ANY car. A "ragwing" taildragger would be nice!

I have posted some pictures of Zeus over the years but here are a couple more.
Engine is now a 3.3SS w/ported Carrera heads, 964 cams, 10.1:1 compression pistons and an early large port CIS system. The CIS intake runners are ported to match the heads and the SSI exhausts have been slightly modified to also match the exhaust ports. Rods are a set of Ollies that have been shot peened, rebuilt and balanced. Also has Electromotive direct fire dual plug ignition. Runs quite well, just trying to get some miles on it so that I can do a final valve adjustment and oil change.

That would be a real possibility. Only I would probably put a 911 engine w/carbs in it. I used to own a restored 1966 Corvair Corsa convertible before falling into the Porsche pit. The conversion/install would be pretty easy, I believe!

Hot damn! :)

fred cook 05-13-2014 07:59 AM

40 Ford truck.......

This would be fun...... a 1940 Ford pickup street rod, channeled down over the frame, independent front suspension, small block Ford V8, cycle fenders on the front with some nice wide whitewall tires on a set of steelies. Maybe even chop the top a bit. Might even make it a roadster!

I'm shopping for a Moke. Hopefully I can find a decent one for under $10k.

ckelly78z 05-13-2014 09:02 AM

Pretty sure I would get another Datsun 240Z, and pull the motor in favor of a 95 or older Mustang GT 302 motor with a T-56 trans.

I had one in pretty decent condition - a '77 - the last year of the early Bronco. You could have bought it from me about 4 years ago for $4,500 (which someone did).
