How do you sell a car topper.....

I have had this Packline Fibreglass Cargo Carrier since new bought in 2005. I used it a few times on my Nissan Xtrail suv. I paid a $1000 Can. for it. I am not looking to sell it on this forum as shipping would be too high. It is 18 cu feet, 5.5 feet long and 3 feet wide.

I am not having any joy selling it. How much should I ask for it? It is in virtually new condition. Where would I advertise it? I have tried Kijiji with no luck. Everything sells for a price but I don't want to give it away. Any advice would be appreciated!

Thanks in advance!
Guy.

I bought one similar to that one locally on craigslist. Also I sold a ton of stuff on Craigslist again to get ready for moving across country. It could be a hassle some but I would try there first...

I know it cost 1k when new, but honestly, I expect someone would only be willing to spend a couple of hundred (USD) on it - and yes, craigslist is your best bet. Price it high and it will sit there. Price it right and it'll sell pretty quick. Start off asking $350/obo and expect to be talked down from there.

Craiglist not very popular in Canada but no harm in advertising it there. Personally, i don't even use it. Kijiji gets much more traffic i think. But i find all these sites may be difficult to find specific items - so make sure you have some good key words in the ad. If you (or a neighbour) are having spring garage sale - try throwing it on the lawn - someone may drive by and think they need one.

I have a Thule (from volvo) hanging from my garage wall that will fit volvo wagons perfectly. Spent likely 800+ for it. Would not expect any more than a couple of hundred and I or the kids may use it someday (still have the volvo) hence not much motivation to sell as heavy depreciation.

I bought a similar one from Craigslist, used it twice (MPG went to zero).

Asking was 300, I paid 250.

I asked 300 and got 280.

Oh, just a bit of advice - if you find yourself needing another one in the future - DON'T buy it new.

Selling.........

You could bolt it on a car and sell the entire rig! Or, you could advertise it to folks with pickup trucks. It would make a great weather proof "trunk" for someone with a pickup. It would not even affect the fuel mileage! Lots of potential here, you just have to find the right market!

You put it on Kijiji for Edmonton or did you put it for all Alberta? Try listing it on Kijiji for Calgary or areas of BC.

Search local and see what they are being listed for. Start there.

I listed it in kijiji Edmonton but I agree that Calgary and BC should be looked at too.
Thanks all. G.

I had thought of selling it with the Nissan Xtrail suv. However daughter still likes the car even though it has rust in the rear wheel wells. Trying to sell the suv with rust on it would likely not fetch a great price. So have to sell the car topper separately.

Pricewise it is hard to let it go for $200-300 when I paid $1000 but if that is all it is going for in the market then so be it.

G.

Try listing it on a Subaru BBS. It seems every Green Forester has one on top of it.

Thanks all for the help selling my car topper. It went to a very nice family. Advert was in Calgary and Edmonton Kijiji. Edmonton family responded. Asked $325C and got $300. It hung over my Boxster for 3 years and am happy it is being used as it should be. Guy
