Of dogs, fireworks and volkswagens

The thread on dogs and fireworks brought back memories of one of the more traumatic days of my life...

True Story:

July 4, 1976, San Antonio, late afternoon, hotter than heck....

The dog, 7 YO male Basset hound named Grumpy who was terrified of fireworks. On two previous occasions had dug/chewed his way out of the back yard.

Fireworks were continuous that day so we put him in the dark garage with box fans and plenty of water to keep as cool as possible and checked on him often to calm him down. Absolutely could not keep him in the house during these times.

Went to check on him after hearing a strange sound. what the ?? He was laying on the floor moaning/howling, terrified look in his eyes and his stomach looked like it was about to explode. Put him in the back seat of my '65 VW bug and headed for the emergency vet (about 20 minutes away).

15 or so minutes later (maybe 5 minutes from the vet) on loop 410 with the VW firewalled I hear this loud kawhump and look into the rear view to see clouds of white smoke pouring from the car and it weren't DDT. So there I sit with a dead VW and mostly dead dog.

Flagged down a guy in a pickup and we rushed the Basset on to the vet but to late. He had gone into shock and was gone. Vet said it was rare in Bassets but his stomach had rotated on it's axis and essentially sealed off both ends. Apparently is more common in really large breeds.

Called the wife from the vets to come get me... the VW and the dog were both dead.

Definitely not a fun day .....
