The world is upside down

Since when do Boxster owners wave and flash at you? 991 owners? The topper, high school boys. A crazy week. 3 Boxsters waved/flashed, one of which sped up through traffic to catch up and pace me, looking and looking, big wave, smile and thumbs up before getting off an exit. Two 991 owners similarly in the city. I don't think a Boxster has ever flashed or waved.

Was just at the mall in underground parking, got out of the car and a swarm of boys jump out of a van and over to car, want to know all about, see the engine, how fast, how it handles, how it shifts, does it have a chip, what will it beat and on and on. We talked for 5-10 minutes.

In Massachusetts, no one cares about cars. Part of why I do so many car shirts each season. Nice to see enthusiasts driving newer cars. My last run in with a 997 owner in a parking lot, he had no idea what my 73 was. Not a clue.

I drive a Boxster and I can say most Boxster drivers don't see anything with their herds so far up their a55's.
I still flash my lights at others, they more then likely think there is a cop ahead

Boxster owners always look surprised. I think it's the face lifts or bad eyebrow jobs.

id10t 05-27-2014 05:39 PM

They read about us old curmudgeons on the forums *****ing about how boxter/cayenne/panamara drivers don't know what the flash means ...

And if you were driving the M491 you really can't blame 'em for wanting to drool :)

If'n I ever get the 356 going again, if you pass me by, you may see me frantically blowing at the puff of smoke coming from the steering column, rolling down the window, and eventually giving a half assed wave out the window - 'cause I tried to flash my lights and the relay overloaded the switch the stalk is connected to. Or, if my lights *are* flashing, it could just be that the genny/regulator need adjusting and I'm getting voltage spikes beyond 6v. Who knows.

I don't flash my lights to other Lotus owners....dang headlight motors burn out to easily....and I've yet to see another Lotus on the street since buying the Lotus...

At this very moment, the 84 is my only drivable vehicle. Truck is half apart doing the timing belt. Wagon I just got the new carrier bearing on the driveshaft today, then it started raining. 73 is a chunk of steel on a dolly, the 69 is, well, sleeping. :)

But you know, the 73 when it was on the road always got smiles and waves, it's just a neat little car. The 84 attracts attention. So glad it's slate blue!

I read the title and my first thought was, that explains why I was falling down so much today.

I couldn't catch a hopped up civic so I won't talk about what it will or won't beat. I'm not sure how fast I was going as I was staring in amazement at this Civic that I couldn't pass but I was in 5th running about 4500 RPM so I was going fast enough to pass most civics on the road. I had to park my car for a day or two in mourning.

Gosh it's like the super secret wave/peace sign us with bikes flash at others who ride. Or the awkward moment when a kid on a scooter waves at you.

Shaun, these were all guys, right?

It could be the rainbow tie dyed t-shirt you were wearing... just saying.

I'm just surprised the lights on your Lotus actually work!

That's why I try not to use them much! Don't want to push my luck

I was going to wave to the guy with a 69 Beetle (his personalized tag had VW69 or BTL69 or something) this morning but he wasn't looking. I was in my 88 911.

Tobra 05-27-2014 10:29 PM

Try that in a 914 and get back to me.

rusnak 05-27-2014 10:43 PM

I got a thumbs up and salute from a guy in a '56 Ford truck once while driving the 914-6 down PCH. But that guy was one cool ass em-effer. He had it goin on with a hot blonde in the passenger seat.

The last few weekends here have been perfect for a late afternoon, top-down drive in the '88 Mercedes.

There are lots of like-minded folks driving the same country roads I do in their old cars: I have been flashed, waved at and thumbs-upped by old Corvettes, muscle cars, VW buses, you name it.

Fun stuff in a car that wouldn't draw a second look most other places.

carreraken 05-28-2014 07:43 AM

I got a wave from a F testarossa the other day near my house. I was in my CS and waved back.

adamred 05-28-2014 10:48 AM

As a former 1980 SC driver, and current 991 driver I wave all the time. Almost never get a wave back from anyone other than "classic" Porsche drivers. So disappointing, like waving to someone you thought was your friend in on the street and turns out it wasn't him. Want to do the fake, extend the arm into a stretch, or just reaching up to scratch something on the headliner...

Last wave/thumbs up I got was from the new generation 'Vette.
