got phone scam this morning

A call came through saying they were the IRS, so I paid attention. It started out with an arrest and how I cheated the IRS 4900 bucks between 2008-2012 and that I will be arrested and held for 48 hours by the Sheriff within 45 minutes and DO NOT RUN AWAY OR GO TO ANOTHER COUNTRY. I am supposed to have been served but now need to show up in court but I need to give them my tax lawyer's phone number and contact address. After that, I am suppose to go to a government store and get an electronic voucher and pay it through the electronic federal tax payment system. I ask him WTF is a government store? We don't have them here in this country. He got upset and threaten to have the Sheriff there sooner. I asked for his name and number. It was Kevin Shaw, but with a slight Indian accent. He was trying so hard to sound American but when he got upset the accent was really pronounce. He wanted my cell phone number so he can talked me through it at the bank and the government store. I called that number back, and I got I R Less. I just couldn't hold my laughter back.

Do these guys randomly call from the phone book? They know my home address and my name. Should I worry about my info floating out there?

If I were you, I would just play it safe by running away or going to another country.

I hope you mean Hawaii and not those damn little things near Antarctica. Hawaii is a foreign country I can absolutely deal with.

Maybe a scam threatening banishment to Ban Island if we don't pay up may work better for Pelicans.

We had a call like that about 6 weeks ago. I told the man on the phone I was not able to drive nor was my wife but that we had just gotten our government payments and had enough cash on hand. I said they could come by and gave him our neighbor's address who is a San Diego Police LT. and said to come over after 6 PM. He said they would be right over.......The LT is still waiting for them.

I got a similar call. I just told the dude that I was the local Sherif and I was not going to arrest myself but I would be happy to arrest him.

This is hilarity to us...smarter people.

Sadly, there are people out there who I'm sure have and will listen and give into these clowns.

There was one of the same nature in my hometown posted on the PD's webpage where individuals would get a call of the like but it had to do with a car accident, relative being held hostage and the request to send $.

Depending on the relative being held hostage I'd hang up.

If IIRC, in both Canada and US the IRS will not initialy contact you by phone.

Extract from: IRS Reiterates Warning of Pervasive Telephone Scam

The IRS will always send taxpayers a written notification of any tax due via the U.S. mail. The IRS never asks for credit card, debit card or prepaid card information over the telephone. For more information or to report a scam, go to Internal Revenue Service and type "scam" in the search box.

Yea, if the revenuers want to contact someone it is going to be via mail. Registered mail.

There is a similar scam going on right now where someone calls and claims to be with a utility and that they are on the way to shut off your electricity if you don't do the cash card bit.

I never get phone scam calls, or telemarketers. I stopped using a house phone about 7 years ago, and have loved the peace and quiet ever since Damn political campaigns still bug me on the cell, though :<

These a-holes tryed that scam on me at 6:30 A.M last Saturday.
I was so pissed that they called at that hour that I just reemed them and made fun of their
monotone Pakistani voice. By the time it all ended the guy says, a patrol car will be there in 30 minutes to arrest you for owed taxes. Nice way to start a weekend..
