Personalised plates... cool or fool?
The current thread about the DMV and "screw em!" mentality towards the fine people that collect our registration fees has me wondering.
I had a personalized license plate on my 944... but I was young and foolish (45) back then ;). I got a personalized plate for my wife for her Christmas present... just because she is so darn cute. I have toyed with the idea of getting a personalized plate for the Miata... however just can't pull the trigger on such a frivolous (albeit minor) expense. How about Y'all? Lets face it, we all spend money on silly little "personation" items for our cars (wheels, trim, shifter knobs) a personalized plate is just another cool do-dad we can add to our car. |
I kept the plates from the previous owner.. Never got pulled over. Used to always have docs ask me where I was out of.. "Um.. St. Vincents... gynecology.."

I had one when I lived in OK. I may get one in AZ yet, I haven't decided.

foolish if there is any redundancy.
for example: if you drive a mercedes benz..and your plates say, "M Benz". seriously? i see this all the time. |
I'm a no on "vanity" plates.
IMO, they all say "look at me!" Matt |
a very cute friend wanted hers to read "sweet cakes" (get the picture). She said she would do SWTCKS anyone see the problem here?

TRAUMADR is perfect because it informs the public that the original owner was a douchebag in case they didn't know already.
I think vanity plates should at least attempt to entertain. My two favorites? 1) On an old ratty VW bus. BONGHIT 2) On a white VW rabbit. ML8ML8 |
I used to have a license plate with my initials. But lost it because the car was put into storage and I did not maintain the license fees. I don't care for cutesie plates. Now I have one that ID's my car model and year. I like it.

Personalized plates make it easier for other cars to remember who passed them at great speed. On the shoulder. In a school zone at recess.
I kid of course but, I've always thought, "why make it easier to identify me if I happen to be using my Pcar as intended?" |
I hoped mine would help the officer realize I'm normally a good standup citizen... ;)

Few years ago in the family hauler I got passed on the shoulder by a guy in a beautiful red 965 with the plate "NO WIFE." He quickly disappeared into to traffic and my wife looked over and gave me a sly smile.

All min have personalized plates describing the car.

This is for my Miata... wife wanted WEWEFUN... uh, NO! My favorite aunt just passed, her kids nicknamed her Mimi... ironically without knowing that my wife dubbed the Miata "Mimi". I also have discovered Mimi is popular nickname for anyone with a Miata. I wanted ZOOMIMI but wife balked that it sounded like zoo Mimi. I toyed with MIMI57 (born 1957) but at that point the idea started to fizzle. |
I had a vanity plate once. That's enough.

I think they are fun! This is "Butters - the uber beater"!!! Plates BUTTERZ. Southpark fans think its hilarious.

funny you mention cops.
in my youth..street drags. not smart on my part having "bad Luk" on my plates. a cop raided our race and found me. he said, he remembered warning me to not ever show up there again..and remembered my plates. he towed me. i got rid of those plates right away. and quit racing. there were many levels of dumb for me. |
If they're creative and fun, why not? My dad's 911 has had the same personalized plate for years (and not that interesting of one), so I may be a bit biased. His old beetle with a big engine (2052 or 2152 rings, but I can't recall - it wasn't just a 1776/1835) and dual two barrels, etc. had '356 VW' - which was kinda cool. My old beetle once said 'teds vw' - I didn't keep that.
No wife is good. Butters is good. The old Supra guy with Git Milf was good. Just depends. |
I'm all for personalized plates if the have meaning to the owner or they are entertaining, clever or funny. Too many of them aren't any of those things.
Some places, personalized plates are relatively cheap, and then in other places they can be really expensive. If they were cheap, I might, but I'm not paying a ton to have a special plate. |
Vanity plates are kinda cool....
I JUST WOULDN'T GET ONE THAT IMPLIES YOU'RE FASTER THAN ANYBODY ELSE ON THE ROAD. YOU WOULD SURE AS HELL BE A DOUCHE IF YOU DID THAT!.....LOL! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1401403584.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1401403637.jpg ;) |
Those are great until your SC loses a race to a Camry!
