An ethical dilemma

I bought a trailer in Florida in February 'cause I bought a golf cart down there and I had to bring it home and I could buy a trailer for not a lot more than it cost to rent one one-way. I towed it all the way home without tags. I went in today to buy a tag for it and they asked me if I had ever operated it on a public highway before. Well, the fine for doing that is, I think, $65 and if I said yes I had to fork over the fine before they would sell me the tag. So I was perched on the horns of a dilemma. I though "WWJD?" and concluded he would probably have one of his disciples haul his golf cart, so there was no guidance there.
What would you have done?

It's DMV and they are just generating revenue, not like they get enough from the yearly renewal fees.
No you never put the trailer into service, how could you have? It didn't have any tags on it.
What trailer?

given that Jesus perhaps 'helped' you get home without a ticket..
which would have been more that 65 bucks...
I would have donated 65 to my animal/rescue group..
I don't give the folks at the DMV the time of day when possible..

Seriously?

It's up to you to let them know if they should fine you retroactively?

Naw.

Define 'operate.' Define 'highway.' Were there old tags on the trailer?

I'd send my wife to DMV......

And SHHHH, don't tell NJ, it's one of the few fines they don't yet collect.

How much is it worth not to have to look at a liar in the mirror?

What would have been the process for tagging it before you hauled it back?

An astute question. It would have meant staying in Florida another 2 days (I left for home on a Saturday) and paying whatever the temporary tag fee was. The tag fee - no problem - but 2 nights in a hotel, even the fleabags I stay in, plus food would have added $250-$300 to my trip. I decided to chance getting home without being stopped. I forgot about the "Have you ever operated this vehicle" question, which I've heard every time I registered a vehicle in Ohio.

I hate to say... I probably would have too!

Besides I thought everyone here wipes their butts with $100 bills? $65? Pfft! We tip the valet more than that!
