Anyone else hoarding stuff for something to do in retirement? - Page 3

Yeah, I've been selling books on Motorcycles, the three Steve Wright put out with his signature, they were an easy sell, Daytona signed by both Emdes, some Owners manuals and parts. Just went to a shop the other day and will probably put my old Bells, helmet bag and Maley steel shoe other books there for sale plus some pictures, a 16x20 of the start 1971 Elsinore GP, I was front row 250 expert. Not as much stuff as you but still, time to get rid of it. Plus a closet full of die cast models I thought I would build when I retired, not going to do that either.
Making my wife happy with every sell.

I could see me sailing for a while, most likely up to Maine and to Caribbean a few times.

With that goal, I'm trying to keep the boat in shape, upgrade my skills... never ends.

What make of motorcycles? I may need to call you in 20 years. On the other hand, in 20 years what we value may not be of value to younger generations. For example, I have 5 cool (I like them) motorcycles and a 15 year old that has no interest in riding.

I see you answered the first part to my question. Looks like a nice collection.

I'm 67 and single. I downsize continuously - All my stuff is important to me. Aside from my painting studio (my hobby) my next milestone is to move out of Chicago and relocate to a smaller city with lower cost of living.

I still have my first car, a 59' Austin Healey 100-6 two seater. It needs to be restored again, now that I know how to do it right. It has been 40 years since the first restoration I did on it. I have been saving it for a retirement project, so I hope I live long enough to do it!

I have this idea in my head for keeping busy when I retire, someone will prolly call BS but i'm throwing it out there:
Volunteer as a light handyman for old folks and shut-ins.

I'd organize a registration through my church or something to get a list of folks who need stuff fixed around the house but cant do it themselves and can't afford to pay a pro.
I'd fix locks, doors, windows, some appliances, not much electrical, etc. Stuff to keep them safe and warm.
Just part time, a few hours a day once or twice a week. Nothing too big or complicated but enough to make a difference and feel good. No yard work or painting tho

That would be more fun than anything else I can think of.
I hope I'm not too jaded to care by then.

Maybe small engine repair like I used to do. Pushmowers, and weedeaters should be easy to find/fix/sell.....always a 200% profit.

I retired on 12/1/17 at the ripe old age of 59 and 11 months . My wife and I have been planning for quite a while for that moment . I went against the grain and decided to off load a lot of the toys . A 911SC , a 914/6 GT clone , boat along with " stuff " I was never going to get to . Since I retired I have been working almost non stop on my detached 2 car garage . After that I have one major restoration still on the books and that is a 1968 Avion truck camper .

After that I want to enjoy what we have achieved . That may be as simple as mowing the yard or gardening to traveling the U.S. in the restored truck camper . We have 2.5 acres at our retirement home and there is plenty to keep me busy . Also maintaining three vehicles currently in the fleet and two John Deere garden tractors . I am at a point in my life that I don't want to be tied to a project or projects . If I ever get bored and that's a BIG if I can always pick up something ( singular not multiple ) .

Will my attitude change in 5 - 10 years ? Maybe but if it does I'll make life adjustments at that point in time . There is no one plan fits all so to those that want tons of projects to be in queue more power to you .

I have "hoarded" a few 914's ranging between vintage racer, non matching #'s driver and very original matching #'s resto project, a couple air cooled 911's, a 912 motor I thought I'd find a roller for cheap (no longer possible), several 901 trans, a few 914 2.0 motors, a few motorcycles.....

We'll see how this goes. My plan was to semi retire, manage my little apartment building, travel with my wife and play in the shop. Plans change so we'll adjust as we go. In the meantime, none of the "stuff" seams to depreciating.

I know this is nearly a four year old thread. Gather nothing but cash. All the Stuff will own you. It is better to start with a blank slate after retirement. Finding the parts is a huge part of the fun of a new project. If you have too much stuff before hand, it is a distraction and you may never complete the project/projects. One at a time.

I have a friend with soooo many cars, motors, parts, he has an eighteen wheel trailer stuffed full and a school bus stuffed full. but not enough money to do any of his projects right. I have been trying to get him to make a list of what he wants to finish most, look at the list and start selling off from the bottom up to pay for his most wanted projects. He just can't do it. When he dies that stuff will all still be there.

The problem with hoarding valuable items is when do you finally decide to liquidate ? Many people never do, and the kids have to wholesale the stuff at an estate auction because they have no idea of the value, and don't want the stuff for themselves. I will certainly find things to do on my 10 acre farm with gardens, animals, and multiple equipment/vehicles.

I retired a couple of years ago. I had a 30 year attic full of Corvette, Harley and Pinball parts. A few years before and since I retired I liquidated most of all of it. Trouble is some stuff winds up left in the dust due to changing times and interests.

My "pile" is down to just some magazines and literature, little interest in most of it. My book collection is also down to just a few dozen that I want to part with but no takers on them. I donated hundreds of books over the past few years of the more common and newer titles.

Now for retirement I have hoarded a lot of antique locks, safes and keys. I plan on doing antique auto lock servicing and safe restorations. Not a lot of money but it something I truelly enjoy. I did sell some safes and down to just three (2 mid 1800s) as I am moving soon.
