Say a prayer for mom...

While working in the garden yesterday, my wife, daughter and I heard a large "thump" and then my Mother calling out my name from the back porch. I ran in and found my mom laying face down in a growing puddle of blood. I gently turned her over while supporting her head and found that she had about a 5" laceration to the top of her head to where her skull was visible and another cut above her left eye. She was walking up the ramp leading indoors when she tripped and caught the 1x4 trim around the door with the top of her head before the left side of her brow area hit the floor. I placed wet compresses on her wounds and managed to stop the bleeding until EMT's arrived. She was then halo flighted to the ER. Turns out Mom fractured her C1 & C2 pretty badly and they had to take more xrays this morning to determine if she damaged her back. In addition to this, cat scan results showed blood on the brain, but they have not been able to determine if this is old or new blood at the present time. Luckily the neck fractures have not impeded her spinal cord and she still has full range of motion and is able to talk as normal.

We are currently waiting for the Neurosurgeon's recommendation on whether she needs neck surgery, cement injected into the fractures or if due to her age (just turned 84) that they just keep her in a neck brace. If you get a chance, say a prayer for Mom today.... Thanks

She is going to be alright. You got her to the hospital in time, and I trust the blood on the brain is being handled. If she needs to stay there for a while, or of any other symptoms occur, get her right back there. They may put her on anti seizure medicine if she shows any symptoms.

The big problem is that you don't want her to become bed ridden. That is harder for an older person to recover from than an injury. You are a good son, and will continue to be so. All you need to do is be there for Your Mom.

Oh man. So glad you were there. And acted quickly and correctly.

Important for her to be up, moving around, walking as soon as prudent. Muscle atrophies quickly and getting it back is very hard for an elderly person. And worst case . . . bedridden -> pneumonia -> death is what happened to my grandfather.
