More adventures in selling cars

I've been thinning the herd, and put my 1962 Type 3 Karmann Ghia up for sale. I've had a couple of "What's the best you can do?" emails as usual. Another guy from the UK seemed to be hot for it, but the deal had to be done within a day or so because he was going on holiday; he wanted to send the money and have the shippers come get it before the end of this week. Yeah, no.

The best one so far is a guy from SoCal, who, without asking a single question about the vehicle, wants to know if I'll take $asking - $X for it. I tell him "maybe" but it would depend on what he expects out of the rest of the deal. He's never shipped a car before, so I explain some of the logistics he'll need to figure out. Today he emails me that he wants to come up and look at it this weekend. I tell him "Sure! Just tell me when you'll want to come by" Then he replies back that he's going to fly into SMF and wants me to pick him up at the airport (about 30 minutes each way if everything goes perfectly), bring him back here to look at the car, and then schlep him back to the airport.

So what would be the most polite way to tell him to pound sand and rent a car?

Send him a screenshot of a car rental from Kayak and tell him if he buys the car, you will knock off the price of the car rental from the purchase price.

On multiple occasions I have picked up car buyers at the airport. Just did it last week with my 996 buyer, who drove it home to NC. I have had sellers pick me up at the airport, as well as follow me to the rental place to drop off my rental car. I suppose it begs the question - how bad do you want to sell it?

This guy isn't a buyer - he's coming up to kick the tires; in fact he flat out told me that he doesn't have the funding lined up yet.

Oh, that changes everything: Tell him he can kick the tires of Uber ride before he gets in.

i sold the vista cruiser last week....after a 4 week process of dealing with the buyer. constant questions about minutia. ive never spent so much time and energy on a cheap car. when I sold my '73S, the buyer called me on the phone, we talked for 20 minutes and then wired me money. He showed up the next week to drive it home.

the cars that require the most amount of effort (for me) to sell are in the 3500 to 7000 range. anything cheaper than that, it's not bad. anything more than that, it's usually easy.

Hopefully that's the case, as I'm putting my 993 up for sale, and I'm not looking forward to it. My last sale of a special interest machine, an R100RS, was a frustrating experience.

And you did not have to pick him up from the Airport!

If you were 10 minutes away thats one thing but an hours drive total for someone who sounds flakey, I would not do it either...

Sorry, not into spanking, but congrats on the sale.

Listed a Jeep on craigslist a while ago, got a call within a few minutes. Typical low-baller, kept calling over and over. Finally told him that at his low offer, I'd donate the Jeep to charity before selling to him, quit calling.

"But I bring you cash! Cash!"

What do you think I was expecting? Lolly-pops and Pixie Stix?

That's funny, I've wondered the same thing a few times.

Well, as it turned out, selling my car proved to be easy; it took 2 days.

A year of worrying, for nothing.
