Exclamation Jimi Hendrix fans - IN HERE!

Randy Hansen, Hendrix tribute, was at my house today with a local radio DJ, Bob Rivers of "Twisted Tunes" fame... Bob and Randy are in a band together called Heart by Heart, with Steve Fossen, original Heart bassist, and Michael Derosier.

Steve was supposed to come as well, but he had some honey-do chores...

They were coming to listen to some Heart multitrack recordings I have, and get a hard drive filled with some other stuff... including Hendrix.

Anyways, Randy and I got to listening to some of the Hendrix multitracks, and he wanted to hear 3rd Stone From the Sun.

You may have noticed some really funky, very slowed vocals and other weird stuff... we isolated it.

well, here it is.. isolated, slowed, and pitch corrected.

This stuff has probably not been heard like this since the day it was recorded.

Listen to it all...

Yes, very cool indeed!

Saw Hendrix, live, back in 67, shortly after the release of "Are You Experienced" album. Small venue (UCLA student union) and he played every cut from the album except 3rd Stone--even when requested. Maybe this explains why.

Thanks, Wolfe.

Okay, that's not worth much. I'm more interested in the story about how you came to have it.

I've been building a multitrack collection from various sources cince early 2010. A lot of stuff came from the Rock Band and Guitar Hero games, when the multitrack "ogg" files were decrypted. Some studio leak stuff, and various other sources as well. Hendrix, Van Halen, SRV, Beatles, Zeppelin, Boston, the Who, Stones, Skynyrd, Bowie, Michael Jackson...more..

Several artists are releasing official multitracks these days, too, which is a revenue source I think a lot of musicians are overlooking.
Multitracks have been used to create some amazing "mashups"

What do I use them for? Study. Ever day I get asked by guitarists "I want to sound like xxx" and for me to be able to isolate the guitars and hear what they actually sounded like is invaluable. People have no idea what they sound liek when buried in the mix...
for example...
Boston, Foreplay Long Time

Sympathy for the Devil -- what a horrid tone.

Some Mashups that have been made with multitracks...

No orange and white play icon for me. Only a Grey Sound Cloud image that does nothing.

Thanks that worked.

Your other two Sound Cloud links .....there is nothing to them either.

I've listened to other Sound Cloud stuff from my buddies band.

Very interesting on the Hendrix vocals.

Here ya go. I did these a couple days ago to demonstrate the difference between various guitar tones that sound great in the mix, but sound like poo when taken out of the mix.

Here's a few more good mashups. This guy "Wax Audio" does some really good stuff.

I love it! In "It Might Get Loud" I first saw how separate tracks are overlaid on one another and was amazed. I've seen other documentaries including one with Alan Parsons showing some of the separate tracks on Dark Side of the Moon and how they're overlaid on one another. Really interesting stuff.

I didn't know you could pull separate tracks off a recording - I thought you needed the master files or tapes. I would love to play around with this stuff as a hobby.

Your talking about the Classic Album series. The whole series is like that. Check out the hendrix Electric Lady land Classic Album dvd where Kramer fades the tracks in and out so you can hear what jimi was doing on that record. Great series!!!

The dark side of the moon is a great one but I think the grateful dead Anthem to Beauty classic album dvd is the best as far as the depth of what they show and discuss on the multi tracks.

You can't pull separate tracks off the recording once it's already mixed. What I have are all the tracks, pre-mix, each instrument or vocal isolated.

So how does one get the pre-mixed tracks? How do people do these mash-ups?

I sent you a PM.

They do the mashups by isolating whichever track they want, be it vocal, guitar, drums... then combining it with various tracks from another song, cutting and splicing. Sometimes beat matching and/or autotune so they're in the same key. In the case of "Whole Lotta Sex Machine" above, the guitar riff from Whole Lotta Love was sped up just a bit.

Basically, that's how they do it. How they "DO" it, I have no idea. I'm at a loss when I think about how song A would work with song B. It takes some dang good imagination.

I mean, seriously... Sgt Pepper's Paradise???
