My fav: Bela took what Earl Scruggs started and amped it up 5 times and he then literally brought the banjo places it never has been. I saw Bela perform his Concerto for Banjo shortly after Scruggs died. As a tribute to him he did Foggy Mountain Breakdown and followed it up with The Ballad of Jed Clampett. For the Ripps my favs are Topaz and Black Diamond but Drive is a great solo effort by Russ Freeman.

If you want so awesome blues, see BB King and Eric Clapton collaborate.

Late night "Kind of Blue", low lights and a large Islay whisky is pretty much my idea of perfect fun.....KoB is really a pretty accessible jazz album. If you want to get extreme try, Miles' "*****es Brew" is it. Regarded as the recording that fired off electric jazz fusion.
But Miles....there was an obscure Australian movie made in the early 90s called 'Dingo'. It was about an outback postman who played jazz...and one day a plane landed and out stepped .....Miles Davis, the coolest man alive. Truly, a bizarre film, and I think Miles last film appearance. Look it up if you like Miles, it got some great music in it. Heres a clip.... Miles Davis - 'DINGO' (1991) - YouTube |

If you want to hear some deep Miles Davis, check out the movie soundtrack to 'The Hot Spot' (Don Johnson, Jenifer Connely, Virginia Madson). Same soundtrack also has some good stuff from Taj Mahal, and John Lee Hooker.
Other classic Davis I have is from the original Summertime (late 50's 60?), In a Silent Way, Kind of Blue. I can understand how its not for everyone but oddly, the sounds become an acquired taste. It might not hit right off but if patient, listen through it all. Davis and Coltrane together had some great chemistry.... well.... could literally say, used.

Miles Davis is my all time favorite musician and I could go on and on trying to convince you. But, if you have Kind of Blue and still don't get it then I'm convinced he or jazz just aint for you and you can stop trying now
Btw, Ellington at Newport is definitely not jazz for beginners Have you watched the entire Ken Burns Jazz documentary ? Maybe before giving up give it a look, though its 12 hours long - it is amazing |

If you don't like Saxophone Colossus by Sonny Rollins, you have no soul and we cant be friends
I do like some miles davis as well, I think later in his career he got so "good" at jazz he had to venture into so pretty far out stuff to feed his creative bug. I feel the same way about coltrain, I love some of his albums but some are too far gone for me.

Dale Watson was here last week but I was travelling. I saw him at a dive bar in New Jersey about 14 years ago and he was great, but he stole the girl I went with from me. Sorta funny thinking back in that
