RIP - Tony Gwynn 16 June 2014
The writing was on the wall yet it's difficult to process. Professional sports lost a true legend today. Tony was a hero and roll model to so many. He will be greatly missed.

RIP Mr Padre. I'm so glad my son got to play for you and that you showed him how it should be done.

Best hitter of my lifetime.... That guy almost never struck out, and he played in the NL, so he was a fielder too. I loved watching him hit when I was a kid. Always a class act too, a real role model.

G'day!

I always loved his higher pitched voice.
Just an amazing person and player. Yeah, I'm a little shocked as well - he was so young. Thank you Tony for all the smiles watching you play. Rest in Peace, sir.

I don't follow baseball or any other sports for that matter, but he was one of those special people. Staying in San Diego to be with his family was a priority for him. Living in one place and playing for one team was more important than chasing more money. He was always a great role model and contributor to the community. RIP.

as the coach for the Aztecs...I imagine it was quite special to play college ball under his guidance. those kids were very lucky and I suspect they feel even luckier tonight. sad day for baseball.

As the parent of one of those players, Ferraripete, I can tell you it was special.
I can remember the first trip we (my son and I) made to San Diego State to meet with Tony and the pitching coach and some of the staff. He almost fell out of his seat (we were in the Alumni lounge at Gwynn Stadium so it was a big leather chair) when my son pulled out his, at that point in time, declined academic scholarship papers and asked if he (Gwynn) could do anything about it. This was on a Sunday. Tony turned to his Director of Players and said 'Get that reinstated tomorrow'. Then he turned to me and asked if there was anything he could do for me. Yes, all us alum's are hurting today with this loss of what was one of the truly genuine good guys of baseball.
