Guys, did I do the right thing?...2 wives says NO! (caution: Porsche content!)

I'll apologize in advance if this is too long a post...

On Friday afternoon I was just browsing through kijiji.ca looking for Porsche related stuff for sale when I came across this ad that was recently posted earlier that day:
1982 Porsche 911 Turbo, all original, mint condition, asking $35,000 CDN obo:

Being a long time Porsche guy I knew right away that this seller obviously wasn't aware of the current 930 market. Someone would buy this car and flip it for sure. So I responded to his ad:

"Beautiful car! FWIW your car is severely underpriced. Original 930s are going for an average of $65,000.00 USD in the US currently. If I didn't already have 2, I'd gladly take this one off your hands for $35,000.00!"

Not more than 5 minutes later he responds:

"What?!?!? Has the Calgary Porsche market changed a lot? I sold it to the very first guy that emailed me about 3 hrs ago. He's from Vancouver and didn't even take a look at it, nor did he give me any instructions on how he's going to pick it up. The whole deal sounded really strange as he didn't ask many questions about it but I guess I know why now! I wish you would have responded first!...starting to drink heavily to forget...bring on the Tequila!

I respond back:

"I'm pretty sure your buyer is going to turn around and flip it to a US buyer for $65,000.00+.....are you sure it's "sold"?

At that point my wife is asking me what's going on so I tell her about what I did...she flips! Why did you that? You just made him feel like *****! You should have STFU!....men!

OK, so I felt a little bad and responded to Jerry (the seller):

"Sorry to rain on your parade Jerry...my wife is giving me shyt for getting involved in this....I'm just an old Porsche nut so I just thought you should know bro!.....enjoy the Tequila!"

He responds back:

"My wife is giving me shyt for trying to get out of the deal. Funny!. Have a good night and thanks for the advice!"

So should I have:
1. STFU?
2. Bought it and flipped it?
3. Dude, you are a good man...you did the right thing!

Alex

I say either #1 or #2 but that is just my opinion. If you are selling a car like this you should do your homework and know what the market will bring. But I do not think it will bring 65K for that car certainly more than 35K but not 65k. Plus someone purchased the car in good faith and might have gotten a decent deal depending on the car but you might have just screwed him out of it.

Yeah, you made him feel like he was taken advantage of. And maybe he was. And your wife made you feel like an asshat. And maybe you are.

The dealmaker in me says that in this day of Google searching, Ebay, etc., to not have a reasonable idea of the value of something you are selling, tough tacos if you underpriced something, it would have taken less than 5 minutes to get a ballpark selling price.

The Karma, Do Unto Others part of me sees nothing wrong with what you did. Maybe the guy who's buying it will keep it and become a fellow Pelican?

All original mint condition 930 is easily a 65k car these days if everything else checks out

I think you did the right thing. If the other guy backs out, well Im not sure if that is right or wrong depends on the details.

Honestly who the hell sells a car without doing a 3 min google search?

Ah you did your best to help out a seller nothing wrong with that. Had you been his first response I am sure he would have been very thankful.
He should do his research though, that is a pretty significant miss on his part.
Canadians usually pay a significant premium over american prices for these cars.

Send a message via AIM to Gogar
So,

You inserted yourself into a transaction

between two people you've never met,

And "appraised" a car you've never seen,

have no intention of buying,

And greatly escalated the insecurity and bad feelings of (quite likely) BOTH parties involved in the transaction you have no interest in.

And you're looking for a pat on the back.

As with anything, it's only worth what someone is willing to accept. It's a $35k car.

Judging by the pictures the guy wasn't trying to maximize the sale price.

You should have either a) offered to buy it or b) not contacted the seller.

Really Alex,?...,,,

Just because you have two cars, perhaps another Calgarian who doesn't have two (anymore) would want to jump on it and enjoy it before flipping for a profit

Geez

Again... You weren't buying. It was not your transaction to interfere with. Absolutely none of your business.

You should have considered the possibility that it was already sold before contacting the seller. That's why, in the world we live in today, I just STFU.
