If it is truly rust free (or very minimal) with excellent paint and those maintenance items tended to - sounds like a good deal if there aren't any hidden secrets (e.g. the front being "off"). Sounds like you could talk him down some dollars too.

Red door handle is unusual.

Get someone who really knows 914's to look for rust. The ads all say rust free. These cars are 40 years old. Rust free would be a miracle, not the norm.

That one is not worth $6500.

it has a 2 barrel Weber on it which is about the worst carb ever to put on a Type 4.

A/C was never an option from the factory, they were all installed by dealers usually very poorly.

Wheels arent original, rocker panels arent original, spoiler isnt original. Interior looks pieced together out of a few different things.

What are the "hot spots" for rust on these? These are fairly rare up here and this one is fairly close to me. If the value is close to what you guys see around California and such I would think a little road trip to check on it may be in order. I noticed the dash pad for one but am totally unfamiliar with these little wonders....Would that be a weber 5200 series carb?

What do you think it would be worth? Something I could use as a point to negotiate towards? Tough TOUGH question, I get that without climbing in, under and around it but if you have a guess I'll take it. (I kinda like the rims....anybody have an idea what they are?)

You dont want it. Its a '72 1.7 with a 2 barrel carb. Peopke slapped those on because they were lazy and didnt take the time to figure out the D-Jetronic system. It will never run right. It tells me that there's other stuff wrong with the car and it was fixed on the cheap. They even painted over the door handles, for example. Side mirrors arent original as well. 914's didnt come with a passenger side one.

The wheels look like Riverias. They were made here in Portland and sold as aftermarket wheels for VW bugs. You dont want 40 year old cast mag wheels.

I wouldnt pay more than $1500 as a rolling chassis, provided its not rusted out. Being up north, it probably is.

You can do a LOT better for $6500.

Very tempting yes it is.
~ Yoda

The ideal 4 cylinder engine setup (IMHO) is the 2.0 liter with original factory fuel injection. So this one as NC points out has two strikes in that department - the comment about the carb is spot on. When you see that - it's a huge negative 99% of the time.

Next big item to consider is the rust issue. It helps to have it checked out by someone who knows where to look. Couple areas are the rockers/jack ports and the "hell hole" (area below the battery). You'd want the car checked out thoroughly before making an offer.

You can always swap out the carbed 1.7 for a FI 2.0 but that's more $ added to your investment that you'd have to factor in.

If you are still interested in purchasing this car - at least go post in the Pelican 914 forum. HTH, Baz

Those look like Riv's (Riviera wheels) with polished and painted spokes. Originally a VW wheel but put on a lot of 914's

Finding someone near Esterhazy, SK that knows anything about 914's will be pretty hard.

As to the carb, if the cam has been changed they work ok. The long runners are a disadvantage. Better if it was twin Dells than a single.

Price wise it's a good price for Canada. 914's were not imported here till 72 and I have seen lesser cars for more money.

Due to new rules by US Customs (in effect April) you can expect the price on import cars to go up as you now need a US based broker to export a vehicle now.

Yes everyone wants a 2.0L car but they built a lot of 1.7L cars and they are just as fun as a 2.0L What every 914 owner really wants is a 3.6L car. I have a 1.7, a 2.0 and a 5.7 car. The 1.7L is more responsive than the 5.7 car. That's due to spring rates. The 5.7 car is extremely fast (Dodge Viper fast). That is due to it's 300 hp engine.

Ask the owner for pictures of the longs and the hell hole. Go from there.

Rust wise look at the battery tray (if it still has it) then perpendicular to the battery tray, is the fuse block. look down there for rust. I would check the back of the trunk floor right where the taillights are. Then next is the jack points and the longs. (debris get caught under the running boards and will rot that area out). Then you have the floors, and by the pedals. (usually if the longs are rusted these will be too). The last few tubs I have looked at have had really rust under the fenders where they attach to the body. Bring a flash light and screw driver.

72 was the first year for a actual passenger seat, but a little harder to convert to 5 lug. (you'll want a 71/70)
