Picked up a '76 vintage 10/22 to use as a host for a build.

The stock was nasty... so bad that I had to strip it to just get the gunk off it.

Receiver internals and trigger group the same.

My usuall trick of hosing it out w/ carb cleaner or brake cleaner worked... sorta. But there is still some nasty looking stuff....

A toothbrush w/ Breakfree CLP didn't seem to really touch what was left....

Think a soak in mineral spirits and some scrubbing with a brush would take care of it? I've cleaned some nasty dirty guns using a buddy's parts washer before but it was "fresh" after a long shooting session....

If not mineral spirits, what would you recommend? No access to a parts washer anymore, no access to an ultrasonic cleaner anymore...

This stuff does not appear to be powder residue...

I have had good luck with FrogLube and a hair dryer on stuff like that.

I do hope David (Targa911s) see this.

Good luck...are you building the other 10/22 back stock or modified?

Modified... Boyds tacticool stock, 20" .920 Green Mountain barrel, some trigger work, 6.5-20x50 scope. Looking to get around MOA accuracy in a semi-auto... my Savage bolt gun does it, just want a semi.

Picked up a second 10/22 at the same time I got this donor... '93 vintage, factory stock. Has wonderful maple w/ tiger striping thru the whole stock ... Wasn't looking for 2 rifles, but at $375 for the pair I couldn't turn it down. Already sold the walnut stock off the '76 edition for $60, still have some metal and the barrel to sell (another $50-60 worth). Gonna leave the '93 alone except for some trigger work and a scope.

My son's bolt action Savage in .22 WMR is also stupidly accurate.

I'm holding out for a reasonable semi in .22 WMR to replace my 20 year old Remington 5 series

Again, what a sweet looking 10/22. I'm sure the Boyds stock is going to look the business as well.

A local-to-me facebook group for spoon tradin' has a guy with a CZ 512 in 22wmr up for sale... $650 is his asking price, dunno if that is reasonable or not. Once you are in that price range you are almost taking HK 300 or Brno 611

Funny, I was doing another search after reading your thread this morning.

The CZ 512 WMR is $480.00 on their website.

The HK and Brno are great guns but too expensive for what I want a WMR for...truck gun, ride around in the Ranger in the late afternoon looking for ground hogs type of duty.

There is a used HK 300 for $2K at one of the gun sale sights!

I suppose I should get a bolt action like my son's, but I am way to immature, especially on our range

I've used the Breakfree Powder Blast before. Strong stuff, contains acetone to really break gunk up. Not so bueno with plastic grips, finished wood and plastic parts though.

Mineral spirits should do the trick with a brush or some #0000 steel wool.
