Transitions Glasses - Anyone have them - Like/dislike?
 

Thinking about getting Transitions lenses. I am not a candidate for LASIK due to certain issues. Tired of constantly switching between my regular glasses and sunglasses, tired of carrying two pairs of glasses everywhere I go. I work 100% inside during the work week, but very active evenings and weekends in and out of the house. I live in Colorado, so 340 days of sunshine per year, altitude, so pretty bright sun most of the time.

Experiences Good, bad, or other??? Recommendations.

They darken appreciably in bright sunlight, enough to help cut glare and reduce squinting, and also block UV. They don't get as dark as dedicated sunglasses. I have Transitions and like them.

I used transition lenses for years when I was working on the trucks. I was in and out of the backs of the trucks and customer's premises frequently and found sunglasses to be a PITA. The auto darkening lenses made things simpler for me and prevented headaches.
I don't bother with them any more as I am no longer in that situation and find clip on sunglasses do the trick.

I've had them for a few years now and I love them. As JYL said, they don't get as dark as normal sunglasses, but on the flip side you don't have to worry about carrying/finding/breaking/losing a second pair of glasses. One other strange thing, which I've learned to live with, is they will go dark at times when you don't expect it, like on days that are slightly overcast; I guess whatever wavelength of light that triggers the reaction is still getting through.

I have transitions and I also have dedicated prescription sunglasses. The transitions don't darken inside the car, so I'm more likely to use the dedicated sunglasses there.

I didn't like them. They don't darken in the car and then when you walk in to a building they take a while to go back to clear and you're walking around inside with sunglasses on.

Love them. You will still need sunglasses in the car.
My wife makes me keep a regular pair, as the transitions always look dark in pictures.
They do not completely replace sunglasses- not dark enough for me. Very convenient though.

My dad is in and out of offices all the time and loves them. I think he's had them for 10+ years.

Thanks guys, this seems to be the consensus of everyone I have talked with who has them. Although I did not know the issue with being in the car and the windshield filtering out the UV so they don't darken. Even the transitions website says Rx regular sunglasses may be needed in this situation.

Have and love. The only annoying thing is the "semi dark" mode they go to sometimes indoors when it's bright and looks kinda dumb (fully clear or fully dark they look great).

I get them on everything. I now need reading glasses. Crestfallen :(

My insurance covers them for free... I don't like them, just personal preference... prefer dedicated prescription sunglasses. I work 99% indoors and don't need sunglasses there, most of the time only wear sunglasses in the car and as others have stated they don't get very dark inside a car.

Hated them.

They dont go dark in the car because of the uvfilters in the glass
Make you look like a goob when they are partially dark.
Make transitioning to inside from sun hard.

I agree Chris, but I also hated carrying another pair of glasses. I don't carry a murse. ;)

I have recently been down this path. I needed to get prescription glasses as my vision had deteriorated to a point where just reading glasses did not cut it anymore.

Transitions now makes a type of lens that they call Transitions Drivewear | Driving Sunglasses

Driveware does get darker when you are inside a car. But, they never get fully clear. They always have a noticeable tint. Also, these lenses are limited in regard to who carries them. It looks like Wal-Mart optical centers carry them, but there are none of those near me.

In the end, I decided to go with regular prescription glasses and prescription sunglasses. However, as noted by many above, it is a pain carrying around two pair of glasses. If I needed to do it again, I would go with normal Transitions lenses for my everyday, walk-around glasses and get a pair of prescription sunglasses to keep in the car.

Co-worker had them (admittedly, some time ago now). They would go dark when working around bright (surgery) lights indoors...which caused problems when looking back and forth frequently or when bright lights were needed but he was now wearing sunglasses.

I HAD transitions; they were fine at first, but eventually started to not work as great. Went to dedicated sunglasses + regular glasses for indoors for a while. Now, I wear my sunglasses always, except at night because I get migraines from the light (fluorescents in the office).

Can't be without them as I squint even if it's cloudy outside. I've got cheap Walmart clip-ons for driving.

I add I also didn't like walking indoors and looking like Joe Kewl while they were "transitioning" to clear from shaded.

I understand they have improved some over the years RE: the speed of transition, however I also prefer a amber sunglass tint... they didn't have that option last time I checked them out.
