Can anyone recommend a hotel in Downtown Boston?
I'll be up for a weekend with my wife. Online reviews suggest that a lot of apparently expensive ($300. / night) places would be unaccepatble anywhere else - Noisy, shabby etc. It also looks like a lot of places are getting $40 - $50/day for parking on top of the room rate.
We're thinking downtown / Beacon hill. Any suggestions? Thanks! |

Marriott Long Wharf would be my recommendation. You can walk to Faneuil Hall in <5 mins and beacon hill in 10-15. Don't bother renting a car unless you're going out of the city - it's a small place and just about everything worth doing is within walking distance. Heading to Beacon Hill area now for a job meeting...

Stayed at Nine Zero a couple years back. It's a Kimpton hotel, so free wine and snacks every evening. Nice place, Kimpton does a great job so I try to stay at one whenever possible. Website shows they have two other hotels in the area.

Only place I've ever stayed is the Collonade, it might be one of those you mentioned.

My wife (grew up in Boston) has always like the Eliot Hotel, as widgeon mentioned above. I liked the Lenox (also in Back Bay area) when I stayed there a few years ago. Most of Boston is within walking distance, so like POP wrote, you're better off without a car for parking cost reasons. The Eliot is in Back Bay IIRC, which is across the Commons from Beacon Hill. Maybe a 10-15 min walk. Faneuil Hall/waterfront/Haymarket neighborhood is probably a 15-20 min walk from that hotel. Or you can take the subway (the T).

The Eliot looks pretty good. Nine zero doesn't have a room available. Collonade looks OK as well.
The Marriott Long Wharf looks OK, but I've had disappointing experiences at Marriotts. (I used to travel a lot for work). Thanks! |

When my wife and I stayed at the Eliot we schmoozed them a little and got free parking but a nice continental breakfast was included with the room. Very nice, quiet and upscale.

Don't know if you are driving into Boston but I worked there several times and never bothered renting a car, the light rail (trolley) runs into the airport and many hotels are less than a block from a trolley stop. They put us up at the Royal Sonesta and it was very nice, technically across the river in Cambridge but close to the trolley stop that will take you just about anywhere in Boston (or Harvard) and you don't have to hassle driving and parking... did I mention I'm a big fan of the trolley?

I've stayed there several times in the past year. Convenient to most everything, including a T (subway) stop right there. Only downside is that getting a cab is sometimes a little challenging as its set back from the main street.

Eliot, Lenox and Nine zero were all booked up for the nights we wanted.
The Kimpton suggestion was a good one - we're staying at the Marlowe. Reviews look good and it's convenient to where she wants to go. Thanks Guys! |

price line
the blind pick of a 3 star or better deals are good [they do not tell you the hotel until you buy it] but the deals are 1/2 price or better for a quality room and will be in the area you want |

After reading the Yelp reviews on some of the Boston "3 star" hotels I wasn't brave enough to take a chance with Priceline.
Maybe I'm spoiled. |

When are you going? Boston is a fantastic place to visit in the summertime. Have a great time.
I'm visiting the in-laws on Cape Cod for a week next month, and then going back to Boston for a conference for work in Sept.

I'm all about saving a couple of bucks when it's reasonable.
As I said - to many of the supposed "good" hotels in Boston get crappy reviews. I learned today that a coworker and her husband stayed at the Marlowe in June - they were delighted. |

We once stayed at a Travelodge Motel that was close to Fenway Park. It was a tired motel but clean, and cheap.I'm talking 15 years ago. There was a good deli close by.
