Rebuilt BMW R100S Value--Once Wrecked
Now that the 930 is gone I'm returning to 2 wheel interests again--started with a 2001 Triumph Bonneville which is a great bike but my goal has been an early R100S from the beginning. Several friends attended the AMA vintage at Mid-Ohio over the weekend and stumbled into one I want but have some concerns about in regard to value. This bike started life as a 1977 RT, was damaged then purchased by what appears to be a very reputable shop south of Columbus and completely,(donor frame with clean title), rebuilt into a rather stunning 100S. The documented list of work starts with the engine and ends with all new cosmetics--it really wowed the knowledgeable Beemer guys at the show with the thoroughness of the work.
It appears the bike is perfect save the path it took to get there--my concern is the pricing which is bordering on 9k. I have read previous threads on Pelican that some very astute BMW owners have responded to and am interested in the opinions of those that know more than I do. Thanks, TG Littleton, Co |

No help on value, but I'm in Columbus. Let me know if you need logistical help.

I'm in the area and could look at for you. In fact, I could ride it home to you. Haven't riden in awhile and my mc endorsement is expired. Shouldn't be a problem though. Could you send me a helmet to use?

I appreciate the offer to ride the bike to Denver but do not believe a helmet would serve any purpose in your case.

a Belgian R100RS 1978 , popped up in Kansas CL a few months ago,
it had 36K miles a faded red smoke paint job and the kick starter with 40MM head pipes, It languished at 4800.00 for a few weeks then it was gone. Then a 1977 R100S in the same red smoke paint also popped up on CL , IIRC this was in Nebraska, was selling at 5500.00 went about 2 weeks then it was gone. If your ready to cough up 9K I would be looking for a K1300S any year from 2009 to 2014. Much better bike way faster and more contemporary. But the old school twin bug may have bitten you.... remember the wooden brakes, the slow take off, The carbs Bings or Dellortos , the narrow bars the long travel suspension, the jacking rear end every time you give it gas, the diving front end every time to hit the brakes

And I have a nice 1981 R100RS I'll sell you for $5k, (or less). It's all original, (not restored), but very solid with Krauser bags and all tools/accessories. Wonder of wonder, it's also Red Smoke.
IDK HTF some of these other bikes could be Red Smoke when BMW did not even offer it in those years? ![]() ![]() ![]()

K-bikes are cool but people looking for an airhead are not usually also looking for a K-bike. Apples/oranges. Might as well recommend a Ducati or a Yamaha.
FWIW, my RS has a tall w/s installed in those photos. I have the stock one as well.

Really appreciate the info--the Ohio bike is too much $$ based on current market so will continue the hunt. I get the R bike's weird personality but always found it endearing vs the ujm's of the same era. Not entirely different than the 930 in it's own way.

Found One---of all things in Longmont, Co and just up the road. It is another R100RT to R100S conversion on a 1981 bike. Really nice on all of the cosmetics and so far appears to be a strong runner aside from some synchronizing needed on the Bings. Shows 24k on a working odometer but who knows. Not entirely sure I like the Corbin saddle but will give it a try before hunting down a stock unit.
Somewhat related--not going to hunt down another 911, at least for a while so I have posted my replica 930 S steering wheel and hub,(74-89), in the parts for sale forum if anyone is interested. TG 1986 930--Sold ![]() |
