If you could go back and give your 18yr old self $ advice...

What would it be?

Me? Just start saving. Anything, any amount, any method. Roth IRA. Something.

And school loans are serious.

Don't deviate from the path you've already set down, it will serve you well.

mgatepi 07-14-2014 10:31 AM

Buy as many big block muscle cars you can find and stick them in storage!!! In 20?? sell them and retire!!
And stay out of manufacturing management!
:)

Porsche-O-Phile 07-14-2014 10:35 AM

Do 4-6 in the military first, get disciplined and get your head on straight with regards to where you want to go, then do college and knock it out. And don't get married. Ever.

Do not waste money buying British sports cars! Especially the Triumph Spitfire!

VincentVega 07-14-2014 10:40 AM

What fun is that Jim? You wouldnt have the stories...

I would have more fun, you can work the rest of your life but are only a kid once. Balance.

ckelly78z 07-14-2014 10:48 AM

Build up my own lawn maintenace business from just a pushmower and a pickup truck and spend any money I make on big block muscle cars for future riches.

sammyg2 07-14-2014 10:53 AM

I'd say:

Sell that damn dirt bike before it cripples you!

Climbed off the bike WFO in 5th gear when I was 24, broke my heel clean off.
I didn't go to doctor, my friends convinced me that it was just sprained and that I was a pussy for limping around on it.
After a month or so i could walk with weight on the heel, but I never missed a day of work.

Fast forward 20 years, I wuz at the foot doctor cause somethnig didn't seem right ;)

She looks at the X-ray and sez, why the heck didn't you get that set right with screws and such. I said "get what set"?
She: no one could go around on that without knowing it was broke bad.
Me: well I drank back then.

She: you had any back problems?
me: Yup, L5-S1 lamonectome (sp) bout 2 years after the crash.

then she axs, any knee problems?
me: Yup. One ortho surgery bout 15 years ago which is gettin close to bone on bone now, and the other has torn meniscus and gets cortisone shots bout every 3 months.
Pretty much hobbled me into an old man.

She:
prolly all related, your heel is bout 3/8" offset and shorter now, the skeletal structure tried to make adjust but it didn't turn out too well. Too late to change it now, deal with it.

Bummer. Been paying for that one for a long time and the bills are getting more expensive as I go.

Don't eat the brown acid.*

Financial advice? When you have kids you realize, just like they do, that advice has zippy currency.

Give them a budget and make them stick to it. After their sophomore year in HS, summers are for work. Every summer.

Get up, earn money. Nothing causes financial acumen faster than kids spending money they earned.

Oh, and don't be a douchewiffle selling a used Boxster. Bad form.

*I know, I know: Chip Monck was actually the lighting man for the festival. Being that the promoters forgot to hire an MC, Monck got the job. I as well as many others thought that his announcement was "Don't eat the brown acid." In fact it was phrased "The warning that I've received, you may take it with however many grains of salt you wish, is that the brown acid that is circulating around us is not specifically too good. It's suggested that you do stay away from that. Of course, it's your own trip, so be my guest, but please be advised that there is a warning on that one, OK"?

Baz 07-14-2014 11:05 AM

Noting that Cliff used the "$" sign in his title - meaning related to $$$$$$.........

Buy a couple old Porsches, stick 'em in storage somewhere, and there's your 401K account.

Would have to be longhoods and/or tubs. A Speedster or Roadster tub wouldn't hurt.

American muscle would be a good choice as well.

Or don't buy a Boxster in the first place unless it is a track beast.

Do what you love - there are more important things than money. If however you don't have the balls to pursue what you love, then you better make decent money to try and make it so you can do what you love when you (semi)retire, and have it happen while you still can do the things that you love.

1990C4S 07-14-2014 11:59 AM

Put your money into real estate.

Don't get married.

Work hard.

I followed two of the three, but it failed to cover the cost of the third.

herr_oberst 07-14-2014 12:03 PM

Find a mentor.

Either that or "Fat, drunk and lazy is no way to go through life, son."

GH85Carrera 07-14-2014 12:03 PM

Buy stocks in Google, Microsoft and Apple when they first go public. Don't sell them until 2014 then get a new 918 and retire!

nota 07-14-2014 12:10 PM

buy hemi cuda's
and old red race cars

learn programing and go work for start ups = free stock

ramonesfreak 07-14-2014 12:18 PM

Skip college and graduate school then move to key west and start a fishing charter business and open a bar

cockerpunk 07-14-2014 12:31 PM

interesting the folks who took this thread as a "how can i back to the future part 2 style make as much money as possible?" and the folks who took this as "mistakes we recognize now in our youth and would fix?"

lane912 07-14-2014 12:34 PM

fat chicks are not worth the hassle

flipper35 07-14-2014 12:40 PM

And Subaru stock if you are in the late 70s/early 80s. $5k would have gotten you enough to retire a few years later. Combine that with Yahoo and sell 2000ish and Google/Apple/M$.

Also, screw college and get into an explosives company. Good money for the business owner, even in a small town.

No complaints about marriage, almost 12 great years. But I do think a stint in the military would have been beneficial for my stupid young ass.

Warren Buffet. Yesterday, today, tomorrow.

wdfifteen 07-14-2014 01:47 PM

Get over the facts that you've always wanted a Porsche and you have disdain for cast iron V8s, sell the rusted out 356 and buy that $5000 Cobra!

If you could go back and give your 18yr old self $ advice...
The real question is, how many of your 18 year old selves would have actually listened?

I was always very careful with saving and investing money, even before that I had over a grand invested in stocks. That wasn't easy to do making $2.35 an hour.

But beyond being careful with money I'm not sure how much other advice i would have been receptive to back then, being a teenage knowitall.

They don't get served up much easier than that ......

greglepore 07-14-2014 04:43 PM

Marketplace...

Nostatic hit it. And yeah, student loans at 8% are crippling. But it looks like th gov is going to forgive them, so maybe not such a bad deal.

I think I'm just a few months older than you Sammy... 2.35/hr....that would've been when we were 16 back in '76 . At 18 (hell, even at 23 upon graduating college), I was paying for "essentials" (i.e cars, etc.) and had nothing "extra" for investing, etc. But....I did know how to "save" and "live within my means" as had been instilled by my parents. Best advices I can offer for an 18 y/o from my perspective....avoid "debt" like the plague (i.e. CC debt) and live within your means.

Oh Haha 07-14-2014 04:56 PM

Not so much money advice but I would tell myself>

Leave the small town where nothing is going to happen and pursue your musical career. and, for the love of all that is....don't marry a groupie!!!
