Some people should not be allowed to own tools
 

So I get a call from a guy who I've done some work for in the past. Nice guy but unless the directions say open beer first he's pretty much lost. Last week he wants to know if I want a old bench from the basement of his business. His way of getting it gone for free. It's a 3/4" plywood laminate covered bench with locking doors. Weighs about 3/4 of a ton. Wouldn't even make good firewood with the laminate on it. I counter offer to bring my saws-all over and make it smaller. He thinks that's a good idea.

So today he calls and asks if I have a Dremmel Tool. I ask for what? He has "some bolts that are imbedded in concrete and stick thru drywall and hold wood on". He needs them cut off flush because they are "wallpapering the room and can't have the bolts sticking thru the wallpaper" . I figure this is a angle grinder job with heavy extension cord not a Dremmel tool job. Load up and off I go.

These are the "Bolts" 4" common finishing nails. Two have pulled thru the wood and are stuck in the wall. Two minutes to grind them off.

The "wood" is a chair rail on two of the walls of the room. He used a crowbar to pull it off the wall. With either a dent or hole thru the drywall every 6-8"

His wife wanted the chair rail gone so she could wallpaper the room. I told him it will take me 3 days to fix this now.

Him "can't you just wallpaper over the holes"

I have a bro in law that has that desire for nice tools. He buys them and then screws something up. My sister then gives me his new tools. I love my bro in law!

I usually only end up with a mess like that when:

1) Something is not assembled in an expected way
OR
2) Something has rusted/corroded so that standard disassembly is impossible.

So he didn't figure out the crowbar/drywall thing the first attempt?

No he did about 24' of holes and dimples, but he got that sucker off.

or even the second or third.

Wow, I've met people like that but that puts him in "their" royal court.

I think I would have let them wallpaper over the holes.

LOL that's almost as bad as putting casters under the front of a 911.

At least it appears he has the blade lined up with the butt crack.;)

When I lived in my last house, I had a brain surgeon across the street from me. ( literally a neurosurgeon...) One day I look out the window, and see him balancing on the top platform of a 8 ft a-frame ladder, holding a pool vacum pole with an electric chainsaw taped to it, over his head trying to cut a 4 inch thick branch off a tree.
Looking at his position, and the way the branch would swing when it fell, I could see the ladder was gonna get knocked right out from under him and he'd fall , probably with the saw landing on part of his body. I thought it best to run out and stop him before he killed himself. ( even though he was a bit of a prick..)
He thanked me for stopping him and helping out, but failed to see the humor when I told him "I hope you dont do your surgeries like this."

A genius neighbor was using a corded drill while he stood in the lake and worked on his dock.

And another neighbor was unable to remove a desk from a bedroom, he needed my help. He was amazed that if you removed the hinge pins the door could taken off....

This is precisely why we need shop classes in our schools!!!!

I called one of my co-workers one night, and he was out of breath. He told me that he was trying to cut a piece of chain with a miter saw, and the large teeth of the rip blade had caught the chain, whipping it around and wrapping itself up into the saw. :eek: He had been struggling to pull it out. The dude was pretty thick in the head.

Using a quality metal cutting blade, with the chain clamped solidly at both ends, and going slowly, a miter saw could do the job.

Yep, I could actually see that working! Perhaps almost as easy, you could clamp the chain in a vise and cut through the link with a hack saw.
