We kinda laugh when westerners say it doesn't matter if it's a dry heat, it's still the same. We know better.
And I just have to believe it's the microfiber that did it. Three other pistols in the same range bag, in the same safe, and they weren't damaged at all. It may not be that at all, but don't take a chance.
Targa, I've had her apart before, so no big deal. Even for another bass player like myself It looks to me like it's just a glass beaded steel that's been blued. I can do the glass bead stuff easy enough. Our shop also does nickel, and chrome plating, and for a brief moment I thought of making it a Satin Nickel to match my Commander, but, the box, paperwork, and receipt all say Matte Black. I'm one of the few that like a Satin nickel 1911. I'll do my homework on the Parkerizing. I really can't Thank all of You enough! Pelican really is a wonderful place.
satin chrome looks awful good....

The Cerakote is a little better than the Duracoat! If you don't mind it not being an original finish, you can make it look the same by choosing the same black color, but rust issues will be a thing of the past. You will still have to worry about inside the barrel etc... Btw, have you looked to see if there was in damage to the inside of the barrel? Pitting etc??

IM6Y, my heart goes out to you. Especially when you had been taking care of them. Phew, I live on the beachfront and give my guns a wipedown with an oily rag if I've used them, otherwise it's a once a year clean. Good luck. Another finish to consider is "hard chrome". It's a slightly dull silver color that looks a bit like beadblasted stainless.

Dave, what is that satin chrome finish? Is it a form of chrome or just the name they give to the particular blueing. I love it.

Sorry to hear, but sounds fixable. There are some good, knowledgeable gunsmiths here. Post pics and wait for advice before doing anything further...

I don't know that Ceracoat is any better than Duracoat. They're just different products. I do both, and have customers who are happy with both. As with any metal refinishing, prep work is the most important, along with using good hygene and spray equipment.
This would be a good time for an upgrade. Here's what started out as a beat up Kimber I did for a guy last year.

There is an old saying that goes something like this: If you know, you know. If you don't know, stay out of the way!

Sorry to see what happened to your Colt. Nobody (well, almost nobody) likes to see things like that happen. Good luck getting it repaired.

Isn't the rampant Colt logo on the wrong side of the slide on the 1903/1908?

You might be surprised what you can do with some 000 or 0000 steel wool, WD40, and some Birchwood Casey cold blue. I've removed rust just like that from many firearms over the years, and got them looking good enough that I have to point out the spots that used to be rusty. Give it a try - it's dirt cheap, only takes an hour or so, and may just have it looking good again.

Clean it up, and take it down to the range. You will feel better once you get into action around this.
