Maybe it's Because I'm a Safety Dweeb?
I'm at a Major hotel in Wilmington,NC. About 30 minutes ago the fire alarms went off, in room flashers and siren things. I get up and walk out with my wallet/phone, and walk outside, I'm on the ground floor. The hallway alarms would wake your dead great, great, great grandfather. I'm standing in the parking lot and one other guy has left the building. Granted its raining.
But the parking lot has like 100 cars. Nobody else left the hotel! The FD cleared the place (false alarm, I guess). No disrespect to fire victims, but if you can't be bothered to evacuate to a fire alarm, are you really a victim? Like I said, these alarms are unmistakable and would wake the dead. It was only about 6PM, not like it was 3AM and you might be comatose from alcohol. |

I've had half a dozen alarms go off over the years when I was in a hotel. Every one of em a false alarm.
I can smell smoke. I've fought fires and know what it smells like. If an alarm goes off I walk out into the hall, down the hall, check the stairwell. if there's no smoke or unusual odor or signs, I'm done. Is it possible I could be wrong? Yup. Odds? A go-zillion to one. I'll take those odds. |

It's only happened once to me, but since then, I try to arrange my belongings in such a way that I can find what I need really quickly in the middle of the night.

I wear earplugs when sleeping at times when I was working away from home.
The apprentice asked me once why I wasn't outside when the hotel fire alarm went off. I think that was the only time!

Never had a hotel fire alarm go off. If so, I'd pull a Hugh and go outside.

From personal first hand experiences I have a healthy fear / respect for gas, electricity, water and fire.
I don't play around when it comes to them. |

Happened once to me at a hotel in Daytona. Gas-fired industrial drier caught the hotel laundry on fire. Not a false alarm! I got my family out of there in a fast yet orderly fashion! On the way out, I was amazed at how nonchalant most people were. Just hangin' around...no sense of urgency. Perhaps they belonged in the "Tats and Teeth" thread?

Freshman year in college I honestly slept through a fire alarm. Had no idea it had gone off until I awoke as my roommates came back in.

Hey Hugh - just changed out my smoke/CO2 alarms in my casa.
I never realized they are only good for 10 years. Not so worried about myself as I am my children.... ![]()

Get out! A hotel is large and takes a long time to get everyone evacuated, if you wait until you're sure there's a fire, it could be too late. When a hotel actually lights up, lots of people usually end up dead.

The one and only time I've heard a hotel fire alarm go off was on November 21, 1980. I was on the 17 floor of the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas. 85 people lost, hundreds injured. I take those alarms seriously.
