I hate being cold but I'd rather be in a cold place than in extreme heat any day. There is nothing worse, IMO. And I can handle 100 deg. and dry, no problem.

I was at an outdoor memorial service over the weekend in L.A., 200+ people sitting on folding chairs out in the hot sun with no shade. It was in the 80s with slight humidity and people were really uncomfortable. The sun is brutal in this latitude. All I could think about was other parts of the country and how much it would suck to be in them, we are just never uncomfortable like that here.

Why on earth people would voluntarily live in these places baffles me. In the old days, when RE was cheap, hardly anyone lived in AZ. :cool:

Dry heat, as the rumor goes, is not all that bad. I've not had a problem here in AZ since I moved here in '10.
Recently it's been humid and the 105+ temp can be oppressive.
But the humidity here doesn't last long...a few weeks.
As Rick Lee has said, this place is paradise the majority of the year.
I love it!

I lived in that stuff for 8 years and never got acclimated to it. The winters were nice but April though September could be 110* or higher. Had friends with pools and the water was too warm to cool off properly. I hate to sweat in a pool.

After about 105, it all feels the same. And with it being a dry heat...it really isn't so bad.

Yeah...and then Californians (and people from just about everywhere else) heard about how awesome it is to live here, and they've been coming in droves ever since. It's getting pretty crowded, actually...

Nothing wrong with Moss between our toes in Seattle, we don't tan, we rust.


They don't call it the Evergreen state for nothin'. All this within 30-40 minutes from my house. You guys in Vegas or Arizona can keep your Cactus thank you very much.

Yes, too crowded, IMO.
Also, when I first came here I heard about the average temp increasing each year due to all of the increasing concrete and asphalt.

Humidity. Too much or too little and my quality of life suffers. We typically try to catch a couple spring training games in Peoria AZ. Temp's are perfect but the lack of humidity is a killer for me. Eyes, skin, sinuses, ... ugh. Still way better than visiting this time of year though ;)

I drove through and around Washington when I was in OR.

One of the best kept secrets of Arizona...we have all this stuff, too. And it's not too far of a drive from the major cities. We actually do have some beautiful mountains and lakes, not just sun and desert.

Different strokes for different folks. There are people who apparently think that Florida is an awesome place to live. Depends on what you are used to, I guess.

I know someone doing an internship in Phoenix right now, she is suffering. It's like being in hell, brutal heat and ugly concrete everywhere, lack of vegetation, schit place.

I think NJ might be a tough contender for that title, but I'm biased from having lived there for 20 years.

The pool here is 90° this afternoon. When I was in high school, I used to swim in a friends pool. His dad would regularly go by the local ice house and pick up a few blocks to throw in the pool. That was his pool cooler. My friend's little brother tried to jump in and stand on one of the enormous ice cubes once. One foot slipped off one side, the other foot off the other. Needless to say he was in great pain for a day or so. I don't even know where I could buy big blocks of ice these days. Most "Ice Houses" these days are just drinking establishments.

Have to chuckle at myself. No less than 20min after I posted this the wind & rain came blowing in. Had a nasty 5min storm that clearly took a power line out (didn't get power back until 4am today).
It's a high of 72* today though, way below normal. Back to the normal 85-90* by Sat though (what I'm saying, is don't lump Inland NW in with all the PNW generalizations).

That said, I would rather be cold than oppressively hot/humid. I grew up in the Baltimore, Austin, and Spokane area. By far and away the best of the three is here. When it's cold, you can light a fire and put on warm clothes. You can only get so naked (especially when you are as hairy as me).

The desert people know that snakes and lizards dig under the sand when it's 140deg.
The northern people know that sled dogs dig into the snow and survive when its -40deg.

I'm a big fan of berm house designs.
Someday they will catch on.
Basements stay about the same temp year 'round.
