My 20 year old German grandfather was in Paris when the war started. In early August of 1914 he was sent to an internment camp on Corsica and stayed there until the end of the war. He almost died from dysentery three different times. Several of his friends did die. He was treated terribly and disliked the French until the day he died in 1986.

Pretty sure this is close to 100 years old. Austrian army, my Uncle's father.... Pretty sure it's WWI vintage.

When you read the story of WW1 and the astonishing numbers of dead it just staggers your imagination. 16 Million deaths.

And the way the war started is so convoluted it would not make sense in a movie plot.

Could that be a bayonet-knife?

This photograph was in one of the latest issues of Smithsonian Magazine. aerial view of the Newfoundland Memorial Park in Beaumont Hamel, Northern France, with its shell craters and trenches.

M95 NCO bayonet. A bit on the rare side, as it still has the frog.

It's the leather piece.

My M95 was made by OEWG, I don't see a "W17" stamp.

My dad's dad fought in that war, died as a result of it. But had he not made it home first, I would not be here. My brother has his Purple Heart.
