For most of my career, I've been "the boss" of a team--figure 5-20 people. I've always been the youngest. I've had some people work for me who had serious issues with working for someone considerably younger than them, but we usually got those worked out pretty quickly. But my bosses have always been older than I.

I've not had the pleasure of having a younger boss, but I have been the younger supervisor.

I went from college, into big corporate, and was tasked with managing and growing a team of service/sales people, all minimally double my age.

I've also coached numerous under performing sales people, youngest being 10 years older than me.

My former boss took early retirement at age 92, so he was a little bit older than me.

Wow!

We have a guy who's just about to hit 80, and no retirement plans in sight. Crazy thing is, he's actually losing money by working at this point.

I was 66 when I retired....most everyone was younger than me. I had no problem with age or lack of it....incompetence did bother me, but I dealt with it..... when the excrement hit the ventilation they came looking for the old guy.

I am on my second supervisor position where I am younger than everyone in the office. I got my Master's degree done early, and found my way into public administration. So far it hasn't been a problem, but it is sort of strange to think that one person who works for me has a son that is my age...

There are a lot of aging baby boomers out there sticking it out in the workforce, and there are a lot of young professionals coming up the ranks. I would imagine that younger supervisors will be more and more common.

I'm OK with a supervisor physically younger than me but, it drives me nuts when the sup is emotionally younger (and doesn't know what the heck he/she is doing).

That should tell you something. Old school.....money does not govern his sense of self-esteem.

Own my own business but still have to work for others - they come in all ages - never a problem - unless they are not schooled in the concept of team work.

My experience is age doesn't seem to dictate the level of competence of someone necessarily.

The big boss is older than me and is winding down towards retirement. My day to day supervisor is younger and relies on me a lot for knowledge and insight on the job. He's the boss's kid and a good guy, so whadda ya gonna do?

Yup. When my old boss left he was in his mid/late twenties. The new boss is in her mid/early twenties. The CEO is above her and is my age.

My managers have been 5-10 years older than me. My 20ish direct reports range from my age to twice my age.

My supervisor is 59 and I am 10 years younger than he is, but next year about this time, he will retire, and my new supervisor will be 15 years younger than me, he's a good guy, so I don't think i'll mind. I'm planning on retiring in 10 years with a good pension, a huge 401K, and hopefully my wife and will each get a decent social security.

The "chain of command" at my work is more like a web, some "bosses" are younger, most a little older. For all but one, relative ages are irrelevant. One (slightly younger than me) has real issues. It doesn't worry me, but he just doesn't cope.

Younger. Age doesn't really matter as long as we're matched emotionally, intellectually and matters of business sophistication. Those criteria are met, I don't care how old they are.

I've been the boss, I've been not the boss. I like being not the boss at this point.
