Porsche Macan S...Where Are They?
The Porsche Macan S has been out for a couple months now, yet nobody seems to be talking about them. Where are they? Has anybody seen or test driven one?
They look great, are built on the Audi Q5 platform, have 340HP and 0-62 is 5 seconds. The drivetrain and suspension is all Porsche, and only $10K more than a similarly equipped Q5. My wife wants one, so we checked out two local dealers (Rusnak, Westlake and Auto Gallery Woodland Hills). Both dealer websites show they have several in stock, yet both said they are already "sold out"..."but taking deposits for Oct/Nov delivery"??? If they are sold out...Why have I not seen one single Macan on the road? In Westlake Village Cayenne S's are as ubiquitous and the Toyota Prius....But no Macans? There were no Macan's in either dealer service department. Auto Gallery had one in the showroom, but wouldn't give a test drive because it was "already sold"? Any Macam S experiences by Pelicans? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1406830510.jpg |
I have seen two "in the wild" so far.
|
I haven't seen one in the wild, but I did see a video of one auto crossing at a PCA event. Little thing looked to be scooting around nicely, cornered surprisingly flat too!
I'd love to have one. |
Seen a few in Highlands, NC. Actually, I am seeing a LOT of Porsches lately.
|
I saw three in one day last weekend, I was under the impression that they just landed last week. One was at a lunch party on Sunday and the young lady said that it was either the first one or very close, her dad is pretty well-connected w/ Porsche. It was an S and looked better in person than photos, IMO.
I'll try to get a test drive from her soon and report, I'm sure it's sporty. |
Living here in Stuttgart and there are a bunch of them around. They look very good. Seen several Macan Ss and Turbos. Several in the Stuttgart Dealership. They are going to sell a billion of them.
While driving in town, a 918 Spyder came by me. Beautiful car. Saw a Weissach version at the Porsche Museum a few weeks back. Several Targas as well... |

Mmmmmm Macan...
|
Talk to Andreas Treutler at Rusnak Pasadena, he'll set you up and give you the lowdown.
|
I've probably seen some but am not surprised that I didn't notice them.
|
I have seen two of them - frankly I think my X1 is better looking but I'm weird. I find the Macan looks better in pictures than it does in person, and X1 is the opposite. Ymmv.
|
I've seen 2 this week alone and we are probably one of the farthest markets from Germany.
From behind they were unmistakably Porsche with the hips but what really caught my eye was the cool tail lights. Very crisp LED lighting and the rear indicators are a very sharp clean orange line |
There was one two weeks ago in San Luis Obispo at the Gathering of Friends car show. It was for sale by Santa Barbara Porsche dealer. Funny, not too many folks there seemed to be interested in it. The two Tesla's parked nearby had more interest but that could have been because of the two salesladies.
I've not seen any in the wild yet, but will keep looking ;) |

I've been wondering the same thing, Craig. I thought they'd be swarming all over by now given the range of high-end/rare cars we see daily in our neck of the woods. But I have have seen only one or two Macans -- heck, I've seen more BMW i8's and Porsche 918's than that.
I 'needed' a new car earlier this year and briefly contemplated a Macan Turbo but as you can see in my sig, I chose a different direction -- a superb CPO 997 TT -- and have been ecstatic so far. As with most Porsches, the options list on the Macan can do downright terrifying things to the price. I looked (on the website) at optioning a Macan Turbo the way I'd want, and verged on $100K in a hurry. I'm not sure that Audi or other Macan competitors have that syndrome nearly as badly and that may be a factor in the small SUV segment. I suspect most $60-80K SUV buyers are not the same as the 991 Turbo S or Panamera Turbo buyers unphased by an $800 piece of carbon fiber trim the size of your hand. |
Went to the local dearlership here in Bellevue WA, and the salesman claimed a 9 month wait on the S and 1 year on the Turbo....

My wife's 997S is just not practical for her anymore. She wants a quieter car, more space, and occasionally takes our 150lbs dog to the vet or mtn hikes when I'm gone. She wanted the Q5, but the Macan is a perfect vehicle for her. I hope she's willing to wait. |
It could be a deliberate scarcity tactic like Apple uses with its new products. However, I did not think Porsche operated that way. Or, maybe there was a quality problem like with the new 991 GT3 engine fire debacle, and they yanked the early builds back.

I saw one parked on the side of the road a couple weekends ago the evening I went to go see nostatic play in Santa Monica. And earlier this week I saw a camouflaged one (no badges, taped on black fake front and rear fascias) on the highway out by Thousand Oaks.
|
I have seen several ones in the Bay Area. But I can't say that my eyes even register an SUV, no matter who makes it.
My prediction however is that they will sell a crapload of them, here and maybe even more so in Europe, where the Cayenne is a bit big for parking ... G |
Yawn....
|
Basically a mini Cayenne that costs less, I've only seen a few Macans on the road so far. The wheels also seem to have a smaller bolt circle compared to other Porsches.
I actually test drove a Macan S at an Autobahn Porsche event at the track I was invited to attend. It was great! Drove really well and made me think twice about the PDK. I definitely recommend going out to test drive one yourself, you'll enjoy it :) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1406909854.jpg |
seen three or four in a very toney beach town.....

waiting for the diesel

Well, I just saw what I think is the first I've spotted in the wild, a dark grey Turbo on PCH and I-10 E thru Santa Monica. Reasonably nice looking and very aggressive styling for an "SUV" of course. I was surprised how similar and not that much smaller it looks compared to a Cayenne.
Anyway, they are certainly still rare around here... |

Saw on today, not as impressed as I thought I'd be. Tall all season Michelin tires detract a lot. Could be a Volvo.

I think you have to drive one, or t least sit in one to understand that these are driver-centric designs. ...not so much a "Hey everybody, LOOK - Porsche..." That outward styling bump comes later in the design cycle.
My take; these are not as high-end as a Cayenne or Panamera, but still give a LOT of bang for the buck. I expect that someone looking at/liking an Audi S4 would really like the Macan. |

Seriously, for a daily commute, I don't give a rat's ass about 0-60 and lateral Gs, and if I want to have fun driving, the last thing Id want is an SUV. |

Really, active suspension is a great thing. Ridiculously good braking, and of course, acceleration that makes quick work out of any decision to gain better lane position. ...all while sitting in comfortable seats enjoying a nice Bose sound system. |
I don't discuss the qualities of the car, but a 1 year wait for...a glorified Q5 that will not get me to work one second quicker than any other commuter?
Puh-leeeze... |

Craig, that's my point. Last minute decision. I will *not* wait a year to get into a commuter. Car's qualities notwithstanding.
Car - very nice. Wait a year- are you nuts??? |

I'm just waiting for them to hit sub 30k used... I'll be all over that!

My brother is trading his 2013 GTR for a new Macan Turbo that is in transit...He can't stop talking about his recent test drive!
|
Saw my first one today in Jacksonville. On a 3 lane highway going 60 in a 65. In the fast lane..
