Senior Labrador Retreiver walks 30 miles to find previous owners who rejects her.....

......but she is adopted by millionaire Helen Rich!

"Lady"

Her original owner died, Lady was placed in a shelter, adopted, that family acquired more (smaller) dogs, then surrendered Lady, who was then adopted by another family - but missed her previous family so much so left and traveled on her own nearly 30 miles back to them, who rejected her a second time - so she was once again taken to a shelter. The story was picked up by the media and word reached the Helen Rich estate - who does a lot of work for animals in need. The rest is history.

A dog who walked 30 miles in search of her previous owners following a lifetime of being abandoned can finally rest her paws after being adopted by a millionaire.

Her new owner even sent a private jet to pick up the dog and take her to her new home in Florida.

Lady, an elderly black Labrador, had been passed between animal shelters and families for most of her life as she didn’t get on with other dogs.

Recently she escaped one family before making her Homeward Bound-inspired trip to her previous owners.

Sadly, her old owners rejected Lady, and she was taken in once again by a shelter.

However, Helen Rich (formerly Rosberg), an author and heiress to the Wrigley Gum fortune, read about Lady’s plight and decided to adopt her to let her live out the rest of her days on her 120-acre farm.

The dog I have had the last ten years was discarded and/or abused by at least three "homes" before she landed here. In the right place at the right time, the rainy day she jumped in my mom's car.

True story: We lived @ 2,000 feet on Haleakala, on Maui. One day driving down the mountain to town, we saw a dog (that looked just like Lady) walking up the road. We didn't think much about it .. just figured it was a dog heading home. The next morning, that very same dog was laying at our front door. Quite a coincidence, as our home was hidden down a 400-ft driveway (flag lot in a subdivision of 2-acre lots). We of course adopted to dog, which looked vaguely familiar.

Two weeks later, our friend dropped by our house, and recognized his dog. Thankfully, he gave her the choice .. jump in the truck, or stay with us. She opted to stay. It turns out the dog had walked (over a 2-3 day period) from 25 miles away, up to a 2,000 foot elevation, in order to find our house. We figured that she had visited maybe once or twice in the back of that pick-up truck.

The reason our friend gave us for her leaving home? His wife beat her from time to time.

Fast forward about 5 years .. We learn that it wasn't the wife beating "Maile" that made her leave. It was our "friend". He not only beat the dog, but he beat his wife. Pond scum.

The day Maile got too old to walk any longer was one of the saddest days of my life. We buried her at the edge of the lower lawn, in one of her favorite shady spots.

Beautiful story...

Toby and Geary....THEY KNOW (some way, some how...I dunno) how to find the humans who are worthy of being their companions....well done!
My last yellow lab began to have trouble with her hips around 12 yrs. of age and could no longer traverse steps...so, I picked her up and carried her up/down steps and lifted her into my truck for two more years. Hips were bad, but she was in no pain, and her heart and wagging tail were remniscent of a 2 year old . Long time g/f at the time would drop snide comments about "needing to put her down"......FU..."I'LL" know when it's "time"....the old girl will let me know. She did one day "out of the blue" though I knew it was coming...I'd dug her grave a couple of weeks before (in case the ground was frozen when "that" time did come). Vet friend came by my house and I/we took her across the "Rainbow Bridge" a few hours later...sad). Some folks are "worthy" of being their companions...some not so much. I still miss my "old girl"....the lab, NOT the girlfriend

Thanks for posting that Baz!

We are the third family for this high-energy Field Spaniel. One of the best dogs we have ever shared our home with.

I agree. I have a fond place in my heart for those who love animals as much as I do. I am still hurting every day since the loss of my boy. I am not ready yet to try again but hope I will be someday.

the house is empty and coming home just does not feel right without him waiting on me.

thank you for posting this story...it brings a smile with a tear.

Google "Gloria Davis Mastiff breeder" to read an amazing and still unsolved horrific mystery.

We have a brindle girl from the last of a 30 year Lionhearted Mastiff lineage. Her brindle siblings were shot in the head and the fawns were left to starve...and most did.

Our golden showed up on our dock after clearly having been severely beaten (that was 9 years ago). Became my wife's running partner and took years for her to trust men.

Third dog was a pound pup we snagged from the chamber. A PITA dog with health issues but now my daughters favorite living being!

Their personalities, emotion and pure devotion make them a joy to live with. House is always a mess, but well worth it.

Good to see we're not alone.

Our remaining dog at present is a Jack Russell terrier that showed up at our doorstep one night (again, a house in the boonies @ 2,000 feet, but in the CA foothills this time). From his fear of trashcans, we surmise he'd been thrown in the trash .. maybe more than once before being abandoned (or perhaps he just escaped). He's made a wonderful companion for our larger dog, who finally went last year.

This little JR just won't die. He's been on prednisone for a lung/trachea issue for 10 years (unheard of longevity), tussigone and other drugs for other stuff .. had to have a damaged eye removed last year (Arr, matey) .. he's over 15 years old with all these physical ailments, yet still going strong (living out his final years in sunny Kailua.

i'm pretty sure the millionaire owner or plane ride doesnt even register on that dog's mind.

that part is to placate the humans..

The more I know humans the more I love dogs.

My POV is simple: Man invented dogs. We domesticated them, made them dependent upon us. It is our obligation to take care of them.
