Air Conditioning Help!

We would like to add some form of air conditioning to our home and like the idea of a "ductless" system in each area that we want to cool (we have a duct system around the house, but think this would be really inefficient as we really only want to cool a couple of "zones"). We had one company come out for a quote and they were asking $5,000 to install a single Mitsubishi unit, which is a lot more than we were expecting to pay (I know the Mitsubishi units are high quality, but 5K to cool a single room for a few weeks per year is a bit much).

I was wondering if anyone has DIY installed one of the more affordable units themselves (maybe only having a pro come out to purge the lines)? Any recommendations on models? How difficult is it? Can you just tap into an existing 110v-15A power circuit?

Thanks!

At that price, I would keep looking
Daiken produces a decent ductless split.
Unless you have a particularly difficult install your first price seems high.
See if they can give you a detailed quote not just an all in price.

Edit You will need a designated circuit breaker for this and any other motor type load.

That is way too high keep shopping around. How handy are you ? I've looked into these for the garage and installation does not look that difficult. Basically you find a spot to hang the inside unit, a metal template/base is installed on the wall. You drill a hole aprox. 4 " in diameter and lift the inside unit up to this base plate and feed the lines through that hole. Next you mount the outside unit and connect the lines and electric. Purge the lines, fill with refrigerant and you are done.
