Robin Williams had a talent, a brilliance, a flame, far greater than most men, almost all men. The proof of that is in his performances, that will live on after we are all dead. My kids are sad, I am sad. He was a great, great man in his field.

His death should be mourned. There is no reason to mock the mourners. Yes, tens of veterans and countless other people commit suicide daily. If one is a great man with talents not seen in a generation, then many will mourn them. If not, then stop pretending that no one is special and all are the same. That simply isn't true. A few men are great, the rest are not.

"He could make everybody happy, but himself."

Garry Marshall

He'll be missed by many.

Great actor and comedian who struggled with his demons for decades.

May he finally Rest In Peace.

RIP

Sad to see a guy that could make so many happy couldnt make it work for himself.

One of my favorites

What a terrible exclamation point to make as an end for an accomplished life. His accomplishments will now always be overshadowed by his suicide. "Ohh wasn't he that talented comedian and actor who always made people laugh and who in the end killed himself!"

What a fking shame!

To think about it he was always on trying to make people laugh, perhaps as a way of covering up a feeling of social awkwardness and as a way of being liked. He seemed driven to always trying to please by being funny and always be entertaining. Never just the quiet Mr Williams. You would think that he just couldn't do that anymore, so he committed suicide. However one thinks that it is a bit deeper than that, perhaps it was a depression over the fact that he could not bring himself to stop (to turn off the switch of) being "on" (this would mean he had no way out from doing something he could no longer bear doing). Perhaps there were economic factors that were forcing him to continue on being something that he wasn't deep inside. In the end he created a monster of a persona that he couldn't just say no to and not being able to say no is what drove him over the edge. So the remedy for Mr Williams to stop being on was to stop being, to end it all.

The moral of the story is that you just need to be yourself no matter if you are liked or disliked. You have to be true to yourself, your feelings and who you are.

We was not happy. He was manic.

The lesson learned is that happiness is a choice, not something that just "happens".

I think the lesson is that depression is a disease that kills people. While it is often visited upon extremely talented people like Curt Cobain and Robin Williams, it also hits everyday people like the soldiers who come back from war and can't go on living.

I concur. But you have to fight it. Life is and always be for the living. It must be pursued. Excuses are just going to get you nowhere.

Is it catchy? If you sneeze on me can I get it? My gosh maybe I need to start washing my handz 18 times a day so I won't get it.

Is it like Ebola?

No excuses are necessary. Depression is like cancer--it's a disease and some people just have it. Some die from it.

RIP Robin. We'll miss you, buddy.

Can I have an operation where you can cut it out?

I suppose some people "just have it" like some people are just bald.

rusnak 08-11-2014 10:59 PM

RW was also an addict. Now all sorts of people who have addictions to everything from pointless drama, to self-pity, to drugs from alcohol, to pot, to Vitamin "X" will point to his death and say "Robin Williams had the same disease that I have. I have a disease and I need my 'medicine'". Really? It's not as if he spent two years hung from his nutsack by the fking Viet Cong in a fly infested jungle. It's not as if he should be given special consideration. People beat depression every day. People with far less money and far less to be happy about just deal with life and turn it around. Feel sorry for him? Ah, no. Not me. Yeah, he was the comedian who had it all and went nutzo and killed himself. Spade = Spade.

What make you happy? Know and do that... Do you want to beat depression? Pursue your dreams!

I know that sounds like a cliché but it's absolutely true. Robyn was a "clown". "Look at me and laugh"... But I don't believe that was his dream.

I read that and first thought was cruel.

But really so true.

I agree... Brutal but true.

This is different from others and I'm not sure why. Maybe I'm just getting old. It was really upsetting to hear this.

An op ed on CNN talked about how this is as strange as being told the moon is gone.
