Loud Pipes Save Lives?

Every time I hear a group of 'Easy Rider wannabes" drive by on their two wheeled too loud butt vibrators I reflect upon the old saw, "Loud pipes save lives."

I'm calling BS.

If these guys were indeed serious about preserving life, they would be wearing something on their heads besides a black plastic beanie and something more than jeans and a black T shirt on their corpulant carcasses. In addition, they would be in a position on the machine which gave them better control options.

Basically it is a "Look at me! I'm a really bad ass biker"
It is the adult equivalent of a piece of cardboard flapping against the spokes of your bicycle.

Come on people, get some gear that will protect you when you come off, preferably with enough high visability characteristics which will allow other drivers to at least see you. Sit up straight on the machine so you can control it properly.
And put a working muffler on the darned thing.
I'm tired of sharing your fantasies.

Best
Les

Not to mention their obsession with constantly blipping the throttle every 5 seconds

Yep, it is BS.

It is amazing all the European and Japanese bikers are not just slaughtered in mass with their nice normal level quiet bikes. Especially considering almost every bike made is faster than those noisy Harleys.

The sound of a blap blap blap Harley is only useful to annoy anyone with normal hearing and proclaim "look at me I wear black clothes!"

I disagree, and I don't fit any of the Harley stereotypes either . My Carrera is LOUD....I've had a deer swerve away from me 'cause he "heard" it first. My '87 Sportster (straight pipes) is LOUDER...though I rarely ride anymore because of the inattentive idiots on cell phones, etc. Question for you guys....How many times have you "heard" a bike come up on ya before you actually see it? Happens to me a lot....
I WANT EVERY ADVANTAGE I can when I'm riding...still don't feel safe anymore....YMMV.

ps: I "hear" WAY more sport bikes "screamin'" than I do HDs....doesn't bother me in the least....I ain't THAT OLD (yet)

Please don't misunderstand me. I was not targeting HDs. Some of their machines are pure rolling sculpture and I've talked to more than one owner who says their bike is stone reliable. I'm OK with that.
My beef is with the guys who buy a new machine and take delivery only after having the dealer put on louder pipes.

Maybe if I was older my hearing wouldn't pick 'em up.

If it's too loud, then the rider is a selfish so and so who doesn't give a damn about anyone else's right to reasonable peace and quiet and only cares about his wanna-be poser bad boy image.
It is a character flaw.

South Park summed it up well.

I've built some pretty powerful machines over the years, and only one of them was LOUD (blown gas flatbottom).
It ran zoomies at the drag races, but at the lake i put bassett headers with baffles to make it LEGAL. It was also well over 1000 hp.

I've built many fast cars, and ALL OF THEM were quiet. Even the V8 914 was so quiet you could not really tell it wasn't stock.
I consider sleepers cool.
If a car is faster than it sounds, that's cool.

If a car is louder than it is fast, that's poser BS.

Now get off my lawn you wipper-snappers!

I agree with this on everything but Hardley Abelsons...

They're obnoxious, the individuals riding them know it, and think it's cool. There's nothing cool about a H-D...unless its a V-Rod.

Sammy put it well: Poser bad boys

This in bold.

But they will regret it when they get older and they're suffering from permanent hearing loss.

Our local cops wont even bother challenging them. They'd rather give tickets out to honest citizens.

I wouldn't trade ya a pair of old worn out flippity-flops for the "cool" status...ain't what I'm about and not "why" I have my Sportster either.

I didn't put the straight pipes on it...but certainly don't give a rip enough to change 'em out either. I also get more complaints about my car being loud (and speeding) when I'm going through the 'hood at 25 mph too

My lawnmowers, chainsaws, weed eaters, log splitter, and a bunch of other stuff is louder. Dad don't mind them....he don't like a wussified, quiet m/c though...TOO LOUD . I don't care if a kid is on my lawn....HE DOES (I keed)...but he's almost 80

Oh yeah...my bass boat (150 hp) will wake the dead...by FAR louder than anything I own...

ps; Oops....forgot my stereo (2400+ watts)...if anything has ruined my hearing it's those damn hippies and their Rock'NRoll...

pps: And guns...forgot about them too....

Plenty of sport bikes out there that are way louder than my HD.

If this is true in bold then you don't have "loud" pipes...

Oh, I assure you that my Sportster (straight pipes) is LOUD . But not as annoying to "some" folks as the other things I have and use...

I'm not a Harley D fan (go Ducati!)...But some of you guys would still hate me in your neighborhood. Anonymous note in my mailbox a year ago..."That green thing is spooking my horses".
