Paul C. Buff - Vagabond Mini Lithium

I was shooting at 2PM on this sunny day out on the prairie - deep dark shadows, blown out highlights - rotten conditions. With this power supply I was able to set up a couple of studio strobes and push light way into the shadows. Without lights (or a zillion reflectors and a staff to hold them) in a photo like this the underside of the canopy and wheels would look black. You would barely be able to read the "Hart-Parr" on the front of the crankcase. And there is only a little bit of flash reflection on the rear wheel extension. It's great to take the studio into the field. Plus, when I wasn't shooting I charged my iPad with it. I started with 3/4 of a charge and after 240 flashes and charging an iPad it still had 1/2 charge left.

Pictures like that look deceptively simple. It is a shame you did not shoot one with no fill flash, just a point and shoot as a comparison.

Back in the olden days before digital photography I would stay up all night shooting the interiors of a building or a house. We used 4x5 transparency film since that is what Architectural Digest required. We would take hours to set up one picture.

Cool battery pack. I had a Norman power pack blow up on me as I went to remove the strobe connection. It blew a tower of flame 10 feet in the air. All it did to me was singe the hair off of my arm.

OK, I found one where the strobes didn't fire.

The other new(ist) tool I have is an RF strobe trigger system. No more wires to drag around!

There is nothing like a large format photo. You really have to be dedicated to the art these days to shoot large format, but it is beautiful. Hats off to you for having the skill and patience to do it. For this shoot I got up at 5 AM, drove 7 hours. Shot for 5 hours, and crashed in a hotel after driving 'til dark. No time to spend hours setting up a shot.
