Honey, my car is making a funny noise and it doesn't go very well anymore. Can you take a look at it?

In my yoot i worked at a gas station.
A guy came in saying the engine on his toyota was making funny noices.
I opened the hood and saw part of a terry cloth towel stuffed into the hole on the valve cover where the oil cap normally would reside. (aka 710 cap).
I say PART of a towel because the rest of it had been injested into the engine and was wrapped around the cam and rockers.

There was no oil on the dipstick either, not even oil residue. But there was a little bit of lint on it.

My wife has shown me twice she can tell when the tire pressure is down by 5 lbs. ('06 Jetta with 15" wheels). She will say something like, "It's not handling right. There might be a tire low on air."
Both times it has been down 5 lbs. :D

Ever see someone use an air wrench trying to INSTALL (not even remove) an oil filter? I have - kid at a shop while the wife's car was getting a new battery. After destroying about 5 or 6 oil filters the kid finally gave up and asked for help. I was equal parts horrified and LMAO as I watched this through the window between the garage / service area and the store where I was standing. Register guy asked if I wanted them to install the battery for me and I just pointed to the garage and said absolutely not I think I can manage!

I remember once seeing a woman drive down Ventura Blvd in a newish MB with a flat right front tire. She was doing about 30 mph--fast enough that I couldn't even flag her down from the sidewalk.

I eventually made my way to my car, and found her finally stopped on the side of the road about 3/4 of a mile down from where she had originally passed by me.

I don't know either, it just happens.

Fiance and I went truck shopping....for her. I picked out a nice 3 year old F-150.
Her: It's not big enough.

I picked out a nice Tacoma.
Her: It's not big enough.

I picked out a nice Silverado.
Her: It's not big enough.
Me: You pick.
Her: I like this one (Tundra dual cab with 8 ft bed).
Me: It's too big, you'll never be able to get it in your driveway, and I can't even get in the cab without a ladder.
Her: I'm getting it.

Two years later, before we could trade it in on a slightly smaller Sierra, I had to paint all 4 corners of the bumpers where she had run over things.

My BMW had iDrive, a sound system w/Sirius, hands free phone, a navigation system... I barely knew I had a car under me, let alone tires.

THAT is extraordinary! The fact that he could even drive it to your shop is almost unbelievable. :confused:

This really is your fault, my man. Not that hard to check pads on a regular basis, i.e. every 3 months or every oil change etc. and never let it get that far. It is not annoyance but your family's safety that depends on you checking the brakes. I keep track of all my vehicles brake pad wear (just by checking regularly) and change them early. Most all cars can be checked with a flashlight without jacking the car up.

If you do your own brakes, it is a big plus to buy the pads at AutoZone. They have lifetime warranty on pads (WTF!!??), so bringing them back early won't hurt your pocket book. AAMOF, if you run them to the metal, the warranty is voided.

On the tires, well, buy tire monitors if you have a <2008. The new cars now all have mandatory idiot lights coming on, so problem solved. I think that was a very good idea.

They don't need to be stickies forever... but they'd be golden for a good long while, IMO.

Daughters Mini has tyre pressure monitors built in. , but that didnt stop her running with both front tyres way underinflated as she had never in 2 years ownership even thought to check tyre pressures-the lesson cost her two new runflat tyres which would easily have lasted two further years had they been run at correct pressures.
Wife drove home 10 miles from work in ery heavy traffic,on a very hot day, in her Fiat with the overheating warning light on, and then mentioned to me that a light was on on the dash that she'd never seen before? Which one-can't remember. Its really a miracle that the engine ran at all to get her home as by the time she entered the driveway it needed a new(used replacement) cylinder head and 4 new pistons, on an engine that had only done 60,000 miles, and had been serviced by the book.

In her defense (or to my embarrassment), I can see it with modern suspensions and modern tires that have such strong sidewalls that you can drive them blissfully unaware. I ruined a Boxster tire once because it picked up a nail and I had no clue (rear), the car felt 100% normal and I was doing freeway speeds - no issue at all, rock stable. By the time someone flagged me over it was ruined and the goop was useless because the sidewall was so damaged. On the flip side, I had a quick deflation on a michelin Super sport (front) and I could tell immediately, that thing is made of bubble gum. It can happen on a modern car... conversely, if I drive my early 912 I can tell you if any corner is 2 psi low ;-)
