Which new iPhone?

Anyone currently use a phablet?

I like the idea of a larger screen for everything except making phone calls and one-hand usage while driving or walking. Usage while driving needs to stop anyway, but it happens when one spends a lot of time in a mobile office.

The new 4.7 sounds about right but it's a tough call to give up the extra real estate when I spend a lot of time sitting at my little ones sporting events playing on a phone. Between the 2 of them, I am at a practice or game 7 days a week and usually more than one a day.

Which one are you ordering?

Smaller one. We have an ipad for games.

For me - the largest one that will fit comfortably in jeans pocket, dress slacks pocket, suit jack pocket, shirt breast pocket, phone pouch on backback strap, while wearing a good protective case. I'm not sure which that is, but will head down to the ATT store to handle some other phablets to see. The iPhone 6 Plus has the advantage of about 20% longer battery life too, also a somewhat better camera.

I will likely get the smaller one. My current iPhone 5 is big enough for most of my needs.

The main reason I will upgrade is my contract is up. I do want to get the payment with a phone working. The dream of just touching the home button to access the locked phone, and pay a bill with the press of a button and no signature is appealing. I know it will be years before that is widespread and available.

The one thing the iPhone still will need is a easily replaceable battery. They need a snap on and off module that is the battery.

Like the smaller one for the reasons above. My 5s is big enough. If I want bigger I use the iPad. Phablets are just stupid IMHO.

My opinion as well.

I have a 5S for my work phone and love it. The Touch ID works great! I'll be picking up the regular 6 in a few months for a personal phone, the plus is just too big!

I have the original 5 and an iPad Air. Of I were to upgrade it would be to the 5s to use the Apple Pay feature.
No need for larger phone. I use my iPad most of the time.

^^^ I can do what I need on the 5S - which is keep in touch, call, text, and deal with basic email tasks. The extra screen real estate isn't going to improve my user experience for those tasks, and the bigger size definitely will make it more obtrusive to carry in my pocket. I find even tablets to be mostly useless for productivity work but I'm fast with a keyboard and a trackpad. So a phablet is the worst of both worlds to me...

Will keep my 5S size till I start to carry a Purse.......

enzo1 09-10-2014 09:57 AM

I want the 6 for the apple pay system .... Of course, in order to use Apple Pay, you'll need a new iPhone 6, but it's for a good reason: "The iPhone 6 contains a new "Secure Element" chip, which keeps your info encrypted and away from prying eyes by "isolating card payment credentials from the main processor where your app runs."

The Plus is probably too big for my mitts or my pockets. I'll need to try out the 6 in the store, but I'll probably get that to trigger a general trade-up upgrade cycle for the family. Dad gets the new toys first.

If I commuted on a subway to work, the plus makes a lot of sense. I see the phablets used on trains/busses in Asia/Europe and as a combination reader/surf device, that makes a lot of sense. Plus, most folks tend to use headphones (especially commuting), which eliminates the "why are you holding a piece of toast next to your head" look.

That guy has small hands. Just go look at a Samsung Galaxy Note, it is about that big.

Yep, I remember a time before smart phones where the fad dujour was smaller and smaller phones. It was the only time in human history that men stood around and bragged "mine is smaller than yours!" and guys were jealous of how small some other guys stuff was.

I never got a silly small phone. I resisted the smart phone but I took a sip of the kool-aid and I was hooked. I can't imagine going without now.

I remember just a couple years ago the Apple fan base insisting that the iPhone form factor was "perfect" and that Samsung had it all wrong with the larger screens...SmileWavy

I saw a news article about the iPhone release and specifically NFC Apple Pay and how it will make redundant the traditional wallet. Apple, or some iOS app, must be thinking about other wallet items too - your DL, membership cards, etc... That would be interesting.

I am unsure of what separates Google Wallet from Apple Pay.

The Apple watch is of zero interest to me but then I loathe man jewelry.

Even though we run a Mac at home I don't have any plans to migrate away from Android.

Apple convinced all the major card issuers and a number of national retailers to support it. Google was unable to do that.

Apple doesn't store information on your transaction, and the merchant never knows your card information or even your name, the system only passes a one-time code.

Google harvests all the information about your transaction, I'm not sure what their security provisions are.

Anyway, Apple seems to have a lot more banks and card companies signed up.

jyl 09-10-2014 12:55 PM

Now, next question, WHEN will you get your new iPhone? Will you order it right away, or wait?

My practice is usually to wait. I'll probably try to get one for XMas.
