I can tell you that with my Cayenne keyfob, that the battery has to have higher than normal voltage when the contact has green corrosion. :-/
I've been meaning to write this up for the Cayenne forum, but in short, the contact that grabs the side of the battery is not soldered to the board. (it's a spring contact) This (with a little moisture) allows the contact pad, on the PCB (printed circuit board) to corrode, and add resistance to the path. Then batteries seem to toast quickly. But really, it's this bad contact that is casing problems.

A swipe with WD40 on a rag probably wouldn't hurt.
It helps with sticky outlets as well. |

Batteries typically need a load to be tested. Open circuit voltage is not a good indicator.

The total capacity is measured until the battery is at 2 Volts.

Glad to help.
Key remotes, they may be expensive, but at least they are fragile. :-/
