Anyone ever stay in those little cabins on the NorthRim of the GRand Canyon?

Anything else to do there? I have been once and always wanted to stay there for a few day to recharge my battery

Just did this with the wife. It was absolutely awesome. North Rim is not crowded. Take a big ice chest with plenty of drinks and snacks. There is a fantastic, short hike along the rim, right below the lodge. Spectacular view from the dining room. Road with a bunch of turnouts along the rim, a few short hikes off of this road, the end of which is Cape Royal, which is the best view on the planet, IMHO

Biked and camped the north rim years ago-- many many years ago.
Spectacular
Great camping- not sure you can still camp. Nights were dark with more stars than you can imagine.
Enjoy the journey

North rim is way nicer than south rim. No massive crowds and it is cooler temp wise. We wanted to say at the main lodge or the cabins but they were booked up way in advance of our visit.

Take note that it's usually closed from October to May for snow. It is awesome. Jacob Lake is around 10,000' elevation, so you don't need as much beer if you want to catch a buzz. IIRC, the park entrance is a 25 mile drive from there.

This is an easy 30 minute walk from the lodge. I was sitting on a picnic table that would have been a great place for lunch, but we already ate at the lodge. Saturday after the Fourth of July, not crowded, 90* when it was 115* at the South Rim. There are various size cabins. I believe many if not most have a door that connects to the adjoining cabin, like a connected room in a hotel. There are some cabins that have little front porches with a few chairs. There are about 3 or 4 of the larger cabins that have pretty fantastic views. I would imagine they are booked out pretty far on those particular cabins, but how much time are you staying in your room at the Grand Canyon? I got the penny pressed into a souvenier that you hand crank. I think they have those things at most if not all the National Parks. Donkey ride was $120 for 3 hours, passed on that. Bicycles would have been cool to have, as would motorcycles

My sister and wife are working on a trip. I expect it will be epic. Wife showed pictures to her doctor. He immediatly called his wife and told her they were going to take a trip, literally

This is the view from the front porch of one of the cabins, seriously. That is the South Rim, 18 miles away, I believe

I have been there but have never stayed at South Rim. Jacob Lake is must pass location to get to South Rim. Stopped to get a pastry at the general store. I like to get out there before winter sets in, stay for a few days for some peace and quiet. Don't want to hump all the camping stuff if wife's coming with me because she will bring the entire bedroom. Want to travel light, couple bags and take the Cayman, stay in the little cabinets. I jsut realized that they are booked way out in advance.

They get cancellations.

We got a cabin with a weeks notice, which I attribute to my being the luckiest guy on this side of the grass.

Having rafted the Canyon as a boatman, baggage only my first and last trip, which was twelve days on the river and decades before the webski, all I can tell you is that after the twelve days, I decided to stay, this is in the late 70's, on the North Rim, before I headed back to California....I was in a tent.

There is a sense of awe and wonder that is effortless to see, impossible to describe.

Running that big water is no joke. Ore or motor raft?

Oar.

It sucked. The wind in the calm areas, there is a lot, can be difficult and the baggage boat is a brick.

Actually, the river is fairly easy to run in terms of line up, technique and run out. Big water is not technical at all. The Head Boatman on my only run in the canyon would wait, tell me the right approach, ferry angles, and off he would go.

I always wanted to run the Grand Canyon in a motor boat and jsut sit and hang on to dear life. Being such wide river, there must not be too many technical sections that are narrow and bony that requires precision runs to prevent high-side. I imagent with that much water, you just bounce along fast down river?

Part I could see looked like the Platte River, brown and not moving fast.

Wife was impressed with all the colors. She expected it to be all shades of grey, like the Sierra Nevada Mountains. I have picture of her standing next to the display in the lodge with all the layers.

I found myself gawking at the impossible view frequently during the day. It is just so vast, like it could not be real, but there it was, all day long. It changed over the course of the day also, I suppose because of the changing angle of the light. It would be cool to do a time lapse video of that. I guess t hst has probably beensl done

My family flew out for a friend's kid's graduation in NM but I drove so I can spent half a day in the North Rim. Its really amazing what the sun light does to the orange colored rocks throughout the day. I too looked at the view for a couple hours and tried to locate the South Rim which is tiny and one can bearly see it. Glad I was able to stick around to hear the ranger's talk at the amphitheater just outside the lodge. Now i want to go back with my wife before it closes for the winter.

I lived at the South Rim in 1995-96. The scale of the place is staggering and can't be captured in pictures. Having flown over the North Rim countless times I remember it being deserted - which is a good thing.

I'll always contend that best way to see the canyon is to hike down into it, get to the river if you're able. Even if you can only do a few hours hike half way down you will be greatly rewarded.

If you go to the North Rim and have a few days to spare you owe it to yourselves to visit Bryce and/or Zion.

I don't like the editing, but still very cool.

You can drive down to the Colorado River but a pass must be purchased through the reservation. That's on my bucket list.
