So it's Saturday afternoon and I'm sitting on the couch

Earlier I was moving some boxes around to make more room in the garage, but it feels like it's about 100 out there so I'm taking a break.

Anyway the woman has this new hobby kick where you take someone else's copyrighted artwork, from a napkin or wrapping paper or just print a picture or pattern you like off the internet, and "modge podge" it to a 4x4 tile, and then call it a coaster and sell them at one of those arts and crap shows. She has to coat them with a varnish afterwards so she takes them out on the deck and sprays them with clear something or other, and I swear to god she's opened and shut the back door about 50 times in the last 10 minutes, carrying one tile at a time.

So my question is, has anyone upgraded to a commercial lock on their home doors? The house was built about 5 years ago with Dexter levers (sub brand of Schlage), and the back door one is starting to sag, and isn't very smooth to turn. I'm thinking of a Schlage Elan, looks about the same, rated light commercial and supposed to be good for 400k operations.

I just love it when I pack up thousands of dollars worth of camera equipment, spend a day or two driving to a site, spend several hours taking photos, and then discover someone using my COPYRIGHTED work as if it was their own.

Sorry Rock, a new lock isn't going to help. She'll still find a way back inside one way or the other. It's best to allow access through the door because it causes less damage than when they claw their way back inside. Three words for you: Bose noise canceling headphones. Three or four words, whatever.

Where 'bouts in La Crosse are you? Southsider here, proud product of UW-L. Or as we call it, the Harvard of the Midwest.

It's a simple matter to replace them with any type or brand you want - takes maybe fifteen minutes. I'd first try spraying some sort of lubricant into the internal workings. I use Bioshield T-9 for lots of those kinds of things. Gotta get off that couch though.

I am one of the free and proud citizens of French Island, where we can still drink where we want. Not to mention property taxes are about 2/3 of a similar house in the city.
WHOOPS: City forgets to tweak rule, now illegal to drink within 1,000 feet of any park

Yes, I could use any one I want, but I'd like to keep them keyed all the same, so I'd like to stay in the Schlage family. Just wondering how much more robust the light commercial lever is. Come to think of it, I've already replaced this one once because the first one tarnished after about 2 years, supposed to be satin chrome but the first one weathered to an antique brass finish, looks like the clear covering on the metal yellowed. Dexter only has a 5 year finish warranty, Schlage has a lifetime finish warranty.

They aren't expensive, so just try the light commercial model. If I remember correctly, it's not easy to get a different model to match your key, although the people where you buy it might be a help. Maybe you could find a sturdier version that you could just switch lock cylinders with.

So have you guys seen the cool pictures that I've recently taken?

The first one is a little red wagon built buy Sears and Roebuck with a fetching young swimsuit model.

This one is a tank from WWII. It was the first military use of carbon fiber, so it's really light, and has a fusion reactor that puts out 3500hp

I'm happy to sell you copies on mugs, mouse pads or coasters (I hand make the coasters out of tile imported from Home Depot)

Hrm... so you are saying that if I purchase one of your photos and do something with it and then sell the resulting product that I've violated your copyright?

I don't know how you got that idea. If you take anyone's work without their knowledge, permission, or license you are violating their copyright. If the creator of a work sells it to you, your use is subject to the terms of sale.

So based on the original post the only possible violation would be with printing stuff found randomly on the internet - and that is only "maybe". There are plenty of CC licensed photos out there to use - just gotta pay attention to the license used.

But if she is buying a roll of wrapping paper, post card, etc. then there is no violation. And I've never seen a terms of use or any other restrictive licensing attached to a post card, roll of wrapping paper, etc.

If some company pays big bucks to license Disney characters on wrapping paper and you use the images on your product - let's just say you should have an attorney who works cheap, 'cause between Disney and the licensee he's going to be real busy.

The smart thing if she's selling these coasters would be to google free use images rather than just using whatever.

You find this happens to you often? And when you do, you hire a lawyer? To go after the house mom with the coasters? For punitive damages, I assume, given that actual damages would be like I don't know - beer money?
