God bless handicapped kids and their families
The other day my little girl was playing with a girl who had Down's Syndrome and it reminded me that there are families out there who are challenged every day even more so than those of us with 'normal' kids.
The little girl's parents were just beaming with love and joy for their little one who was getting lots of attention and play time with my daughter. I just feel so humbled by both my little girl and the parents of that beautiful child. God bless all of you Pelican's who were chosen to meet the challenges of handicapped or sick children. Sorry about the corny post.

"Sorry about the corny post."
~~~~~~~~~ Not "corny" at all! Takes a special person to notice and have the empathy that you experienced.
Good job by your daughter as well to take a chance on a "different" kid and find out that she was fun to play with as well. Being included must of had put that child on top of the world.
Every time I see a family, at an amusement park or just out having a good time, that has someone that is 'challenged' in it, I realize just how fortunate we are as a family.
Not corny at all, and thanks for the reminder.
Yes.
I get a lump in my throat every time I watch the special olympics. Whenever I see a child with special needs...my heart aches for them...although they do not care...they are such brave souls every one. You are not alone Beretta.
My sister gave birth to my nephew in 97. ... He had quite a few health problems (mobious syndrome plus more I can't pronounce). ... She was told he would never walk, talk, lead a normal life, or make it past 4 years old. .... For the first 5 years of his life my sister maybe got 1 hour of scattered sleep per night...... through her toughness, and unwillingness to accept numerous doctors prognosis, countless hospital visits, a husband with major personal mental problems from years in Iraq...... yet she always pulled and held things together. ....
He turned 17 this past July, strait a's in school, great morals, and is way smarter than the average bear...... People who go through what they go through for their own get the highest respect from me...... |
I'm not aware of anything that emotionally guts a person like experiencing their own child's suffering, struggling against all hope or dying. It is a living hell of varying degrees but always a hell.
My older sister has Downs Syndrome, I have posted a few times here about her. I always knew my parents had done extraordinary things for her but it was not until I became a dad myself that the full scope and breadth of their sacrifice, sheer determination and fortitude over the years became apparent to me. I don't always see eye to eye with them, but I respect the hell out of them.
I believe parents of special needs kids do sacrifice more than most... but, in return, they are part of a loving relationship with their children that normal families will never know about. Sometimes, I even feel a bit jealous
